Delhi-NCR is bracing for another spell of intense monsoon activity on Wednesday, September 2, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across parts of the National Capital Region. The renewed weather system is expected to bring relief from the recent humidity and heat, but could also trigger waterlogging, traffic disruptions and difficult commuting conditions.
Delhi-NCR weather today: Rain likely across several areas
The national capital woke up to generally cloudy conditions as rain activity increased across parts of Delhi and neighbouring NCR areas. The IMD forecast indicates spells of very light to light rain at many places, with moderate rainfall possible in some locations.
During the morning and afternoon, several areas could experience thunderstorms and lightning alongside rainfall. Another spell of light rain is expected from the afternoon into the evening, suggesting that wet conditions may continue intermittently throughout the day.
The forecast is particularly significant for commuters in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, where intense showers can quickly affect road conditions and traffic movement.
Temperatures likely to remain lower
The fresh spell of rain is expected to keep temperatures below the levels seen during the recent humid period. According to the IMD forecast, Delhi’s maximum temperature is likely to remain around 32-34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could stay between 24-26 degrees Celsius.
The persistent cloud cover will reduce the impact of direct sunlight and provide some relief from uncomfortable conditions. Heavy rain recorded in parts of Delhi on Wednesday morning also brought relief to residents dealing with humid weather.
IMD warns of heavy rainfall through September 5
The weather situation is not expected to be limited to Wednesday. The IMD has forecast a period of enhanced rainfall activity across Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from September 2 to September 5.
Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected during September 2-4. Rainfall activity is likely to become more widespread on September 3 and 4, when fairly widespread to widespread precipitation has been forecast over the region.
This means residents should remain prepared for changing weather conditions over the next few days, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Why is Delhi receiving more rain?
The renewed rainfall activity has been linked to a well-marked low-pressure area positioned over West Jharkhand and adjoining regions.

The weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards across southern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours. Its movement is contributing to increased moisture and instability over parts of northern India.
Another important factor is the position of the monsoon trough. The elongated low-pressure zone is currently extending through Ferozpur, Delhi and Lucknow before stretching towards the Bay of Bengal.
The interaction between the low-pressure system and the monsoon trough is supporting stronger rainfall activity over northern parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR.
Waterlogging and traffic disruption remain key concerns
Although the rainfall is expected to occur in spells rather than as a continuous downpour, isolated intense showers could create problems in vulnerable parts of the capital and NCR.
Low-lying areas may face temporary waterlogging, while heavy showers can reduce visibility and slow traffic. Previous rainfall episodes in Delhi-NCR have already highlighted the impact of intense monsoon showers on rush-hour movement, with several major roads witnessing congestion.
Residents travelling during periods of heavy rain are therefore likely to face longer journey times. Motorists may also encounter waterlogged stretches and reduced visibility, particularly during thunderstorms.

The latest rainfall comes as a welcome break from the hot and humid conditions experienced across Delhi-NCR in recent days. Cloudy skies and intermittent showers are expected to keep the weather relatively cooler.
However, the combination of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning means residents should remain cautious. Outdoor activities may be disrupted, while commuters should monitor weather updates before beginning their journeys.
With the IMD expecting rainfall activity to strengthen further on September 3 and 4, Delhi-NCR could remain under the influence of an active monsoon spell for the next several days.
