NEW DELHI: The national capital is likely to witness a fresh spell of rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a weather alert for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The forecast comes as monsoon activity strengthens across northern India, promising relief from the prevailing heat and humidity while also raising concerns over traffic disruptions and localized waterlogging.

According to the IMD, Delhi is expected to experience generally cloudy skies throughout the day, with light to moderate rainfall likely in several areas. Thunderstorms and lightning may occur during the afternoon and evening hours, while wind speeds could reach between 40 and 60 kmph during intense weather activity.

Weather officials have advised residents to remain alert, especially during periods of lightning and strong winds. People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from electric poles, and postpone unnecessary outdoor activities if thunderstorms intensify. Motorists have also been asked to drive carefully due to the possibility of reduced visibility and slippery roads.

Monsoon Strengthening Across North India

The weather alert for Delhi comes as the southwest monsoon continues its advance across large parts of the country. Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, are also expected to receive rainfall of varying intensity over the coming days. In many regions, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds have been forecast along with heavy rain.

Meteorologists say the enhanced monsoon activity is responsible for the changing weather conditions in Delhi. The rainfall is expected to lower daytime temperatures, bringing relief after several days of hot and humid weather that had made outdoor conditions uncomfortable for residents.

Possible Impact on Daily Life

Even though the expected rainfall is likely to improve weather conditions, civic authorities have cautioned that sudden downpours may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and slow-moving traffic during peak hours. Commuters using roads and public transport have been advised to plan their travel with additional time in hand.

Authorities are also keeping a close watch on vulnerable locations that have historically experienced flooding during heavy rainfall. Emergency response teams remain on standby to deal with any weather-related incidents that may arise.

Safety Advisory Issued

The IMD has recommended several precautionary measures for the public:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible.
  • Avoid open fields, tall trees and metal structures during lightning activity.
  • Secure loose outdoor objects that may be affected by strong winds.
  • Keep electronic devices unplugged during severe lightning, if necessary.
  • Follow official weather updates and advisories before travelling.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Forecasts indicate that Delhi may continue to experience cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain over the next few days as monsoon conditions remain favourable. Similar weather patterns are expected across the NCR region, with occasional thunderstorms and gusty winds accompanying rainfall.

Weather experts have advised residents to stay updated through official forecasts, as the intensity and timing of rainfall may vary across different parts of the city. While the showers are expected to provide welcome relief from the summer heat, authorities continue to stress the importance of exercising caution during periods of severe weather.
