Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has strongly criticised the Congress over its alleged refusal to formally honour Vande Mataram, arguing that the issue goes beyond political differences and raises serious questions about constitutional responsibility, parliamentary dignity and respect for national symbols.
Singh said that deliberately ignoring or refusing to honour the national song was highly unfortunate and should not be treated as an ordinary political disagreement. He argued that elected representatives have a responsibility to uphold the dignity of the country’s institutions and respect symbols associated with India’s national movement.

According to Singh, Parliament occupies a position of the highest importance in India’s constitutional framework, and conduct connected with Parliament therefore carries significant public responsibility.
The Home Minister argued that if anyone refuses to honour Vande Mataram, questions can naturally arise about that person’s commitment to constitutional values. He maintained that respect for national symbols should be viewed as part of the larger responsibility of public representatives.
Singh further claimed that opposition to Vande Mataram could also lead to questions about the patriotic commitment of those taking such a position.

Congress’ 1937 Resolution Comes Under Attack
Singh also invoked the Congress’ 1937 resolution concerning Vande Mataram while criticising the party’s present position.
He alleged that the decision taken at the time reflected an attempt to accommodate the demands of the Muslim League. According to Singh, such political compromises with radical elements eventually contributed to circumstances whose consequences India experienced during Partition.
The Home Minister argued that history demonstrates the dangers of making compromises under pressure from radical forces. He said that decisions taken to accommodate such demands can have consequences far beyond immediate political calculations.
“Compromise With Radical Elements Is Dangerous”
Singh used the historical reference to make a broader political argument against what he described as the Congress’ present-day compromises.
