NEW DELHI: A major protest march organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in New Delhi turned violent on Monday after demonstrators attempting to march towards Parliament clashed with security personnel. According to Delhi Police, more than 70 protesters were detained while over 50 police personnel, including five IPS officers, sustained injuries during the unrest.
The confrontation unfolded in several parts of central Delhi, where heavy security arrangements had been put in place ahead of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. Authorities had already imposed restrictions and erected multiple barricades to prevent protesters from reaching Parliament House.
Police Allege Stone Pelting and Vandalism
Delhi Police said the violence erupted after sections of the crowd allegedly attempted to breach security barricades. Officials claimed protesters resorted to stone pelting, attacked police vehicles, and damaged public as well as private property.
According to police, two police buses were vandalised, while several shops in the Janpath area suffered damage during the clashes. Security personnel deployed at various barricading points reportedly came under attack as officers tried to disperse the crowd.
A senior police officer said the force exercised restraint initially but had to intervene after protesters allegedly turned violent and threatened public safety. Police personnel used crowd-control measures, including tear gas and baton charges, to prevent the march from advancing toward Parliament.
Over 50 Police Personnel Injured
Delhi Police stated that more than 50 members of the security forces were injured during the confrontation, including five Indian P,olice Service (IPS) officers supervisin,g security arrangements.
Most of the injured personnel suffered injuries caused by stone pelting and physical confrontations while attempting to control the situation. Several injured officers received medical treatment, while authorities continued to assess the full extent of the damage.
Police also launched an investigation into incidents of vandalism, including attacks on government vehicles and commercial establishments.
Protesters Accuse Police of Excessive Force
Leaders and supporters of the CJP strongly disputed the police version of events, alleging that security personnel used excessive force against demonstrators.
The organisation claimed peaceful protesters were subjected to lathi charges and tear gas despite exercising their democratic right to protest. CJP representatives also alleged that several protesters, including women and minors, sustained injuries during the police action.
Some leaders claimed family members of protest organisers were also mistreated during the confrontation, allegations that have intensified the political controversy surrounding the protest.
Security Tightened Across the National Capital
The Delhi Police had deployed thousands of personnel across central Delhi ahead of the scheduled march. Multiple layers of barricades, traffic diversions, and surveillance measures were put in place around Parliament, Janpath, Jantar Mantar, and adjoining areas.
Several Metro stations witnessed heightened security, while commuters experienced traffic congestion due to road closures and vehicle checks. Authorities urged residents to avoid affected routes as police continued to monitor the situation throughout the day.
Protest Linked to Education Reform Demands
The CJP has been spearheading protests over alleged examination irregularities, repeated paper leaks, and demands for accountability from the Union government. The organisation has also sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and broader reforms in the country’s examination system.
The “Sansad Chalo” march was announced as an attempt to bring these demands directly before Parliament during the Monsoon Session. However, Delhi Police maintained that no permission had been granted for the march because prohibitory orders remained in force in the New Delhi district.
Government Opens Dialogue Amid Continuing Protest
Despite the day’s violence, discussions between government representatives and CJP leaders have begun. Representatives of the protest movement met senior BJP leader J.P. Nadda and submitted a memorandum outlining their demands.
Following the meeting, CJP leaders described the dialogue as a significant step but indicated that their agitation would continue until concrete assurances were provided. Protesters remained gathered at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrations continued under heightened security.
Investigation Underway
Police have initiated legal proceedings in connection with the violence, including cases related to vandalism, attacks on public servants, and damage to public property. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify individuals allegedly involved in the clashes.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticised the handling of the protest, while the government has emphasised the need to maintain law and order. As both sides continue to present conflicting accounts, authorities are expected to review the day’s events while maintaining a heavy security presence in central Delhi.
