West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has acknowledged that extortion and syndicate-related activities have not been completely eliminated from the state despite the BJP-led government being in power for the past two months. Speaking at an industry-focused event, he admitted that claiming total success against such practices would be misleading and stressed that deep-rooted problems require sustained administrative action.
Frank admission on extortion challenge
Addressing entrepreneurs at the Udyami Samagam programme held at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Bhattacharya said the government inherited a system where illegal syndicates and extortion had become entrenched over many years. According to him, such practices cannot be dismantled overnight, even after a change in government.
He stated that while significant efforts are underway to improve governance, certain irregularities still persist. Bhattacharya also admitted that some individuals associated with his own party have shown similar tendencies, making it clear that the administration will not ignore such behaviour.
The BJP leader said transparency and accountability would remain central to the government’s approach as it works to improve the state’s investment climate.
Industry revival placed at the centre of policy
Bhattacharya highlighted that restoring industrial growth is among the government’s highest priorities. He said West Bengal has witnessed a prolonged outflow of investments over the years, and reversing that trend would require an environment where businesses can operate without political interference or illegal demands.
According to him, industries should be able to function based on economic merit rather than political influence. He argued that investors need confidence that projects can proceed without extortion, coercion or unnecessary disruptions.
He announced that the state government would soon begin consultations with industrialists, business organisations and other stakeholders before finalising a comprehensive industrial policy aimed at attracting fresh investments and generating employment.
Warning to party workers
Bhattacharya also used the occasion to send a strong message to BJP workers and newly inducted leaders.
He warned them against engaging in aggressive political behaviour, including humiliating opposition leaders through public protests involving egg-throwing or similar acts. Such actions, he cautioned, could eventually backfire against those indulging in them.
Calling for discipline and restraint, he said political workers must maintain dignity and avoid creating an atmosphere of confrontation that could damage the party’s image. Public representatives, he added, should focus on governance and development rather than political theatrics.
Syndicate culture remains a concern
The issue of syndicate operations has long been a major concern among businesses operating in West Bengal. Entrepreneurs have frequently complained about illegal demands, forced procurement practices and unofficial payments that increase project costs and discourage fresh investments.

Bhattacharya acknowledged that such practices became deeply embedded over time and said changing this culture would require coordinated efforts from the government, administration and law enforcement agencies.
He maintained that the BJP government is committed to creating a transparent business ecosystem where industries can function freely and investors can make long-term commitments with confidence.
Focus on investor confidence
Business leaders attending the programme reportedly welcomed the government’s willingness to engage directly with industry before introducing a new policy framework.
The proposed industrial policy is expected to address issues including land availability, ease of doing business, infrastructure development and measures to reduce bureaucratic hurdles.
Bhattacharya said consultations would ensure that the policy reflects practical industry requirements rather than remaining only a government document. He expressed confidence that a collaborative approach would help bring new investments into manufacturing, technology and other key sectors.
Balancing governance with accountability
Political observers noted that Bhattacharya’s remarks stood out because they included a candid acknowledgment of shortcomings instead of presenting an entirely optimistic assessment.
His admission that extortion has not yet been fully eradicated was accompanied by a commitment to strengthen governance and hold accountable anyone involved in illegal practices, regardless of political affiliation.
The BJP leadership believes that restoring public trust and rebuilding investor confidence will require consistent action rather than promises alone. Officials have indicated that future industrial reforms will focus on transparency, administrative efficiency and reducing opportunities for corruption.
