A horrifying shooting at a school near Bangkok has left Thailand shocked, with a teacher killed, four people injured and the student gunman dead after the attack on Friday. The incident took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, just outside the Thai capital.
According to police and local authorities, the attacker was a student at the school. He opened fire inside the campus before later taking his own life. The incident triggered a major emergency response, with police, ambulances and rescue teams rushing to the school as students and teachers fled the premises.
Reuters reported that the deceased teacher was among the victims, while three students and another teacher were injured. Authorities were continuing to investigate the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
Gunfire Triggers Panic Inside School
The shooting was reported at around 10am local time, when emergency volunteers received information about gunshots being fired inside the school. The sudden violence sent students and staff into panic as they attempted to escape from the area.
Images from the scene showed large numbers of students leaving the school while emergency personnel gathered outside. Ambulances were deployed to transport injured victims for medical treatment.
Initial reports suggested a higher number of casualties, with some early accounts saying several people may have been killed and as many as 15 injured. However, as authorities continued verifying information, police figures indicated that one teacher had died and four others had been wounded, while the student gunman had also died.

Student Identified As Suspected Gunman
Bangkok Police said the shooter was a student at the school. After opening fire, he eventually died from a self-inflicted injury.

The latest attack is therefore likely to renew debate over firearm access and security measures in Thailand.
Thailand has comparatively high levels of civilian firearm ownership within Southeast Asia. Media cited estimates of roughly 10 million firearms in circulation in the country, equivalent to approximately one firearm for every seven people.
Despite previous efforts and promises to strengthen gun-control measures, shootings have continued to occur, keeping firearm regulation a sensitive national issue.
Investigation Underway
Police are now investigating how the student obtained the weapon and what prompted him to open fire inside the school.
Bangkok Authorities will also have to determine whether the attacker acted alone and whether there were warning signs before the shooting. Investigators are expected to speak with witnesses, school officials, students and the families of those involved.
