Astronomers Confirm Atmosphere On Nearby Earth-Like Planet In Major Breakthrough For Space Exploration

Astronomers confirm a stable atmosphere on LHS 1140 b, a nearby rocky exoplanet in the habitable zone, marking a significant advance in the search for potentially life-supporting worlds.

Astronomers have achieved a landmark breakthrough by confirming the presence of an atmosphere around a rocky, Earth-like planet located just 48–49 light-years from Earth. The discovery marks the first confirmed detection of an atmosphere surrounding a rocky planet orbiting within the habitable zone of its star, offering new optimism in the global search for life beyond our Solar System.

The planet, known as LHS 1140 b, orbits a relatively cool red dwarf star in the constellation Cetus. Since its discovery in 2017, scientists have considered it one of the most promising candidates for habitability because it lies within the “Goldilocks Zone”—a region where temperatures may allow liquid water to exist on the planet’s surface. Until now, however, researchers had been unable to confirm whether the planet possessed an atmosphere, a crucial ingredient for supporting life as we know it.

Helium Detection Provides the Crucial Evidence

The breakthrough came after astronomers observed helium escaping from the planet’s upper atmosphere using the WINERED infrared spectrograph mounted on the Magellan Clay Telescope in Chile. Detecting helium provided the strongest evidence yet that LHS 1140 b has retained a substantial atmosphere despite billions of years of exposure to radiation from its parent star.

Researchers explained that the initial helium signal was recorded during one observation, while later observations did not detect the gas as clearly. After extensive analysis, scientists ruled out instrumental errors and confirmed that the original detection was genuine. This finding significantly improves confidence that the planet possesses a long-lasting atmosphere rather than being a barren rocky world.

A Rocky World With Earth-Like Characteristics

LHS 1140 b is classified as a “super-Earth,” meaning it is larger and more massive than Earth but still composed primarily of rock. The planet has roughly 5.6 times Earth’s mass and a radius about 70 percent larger than our own planet.

Scientists believe the world may contain vast amounts of water and possibly even a global ocean. Although it is tidally locked—meaning one side permanently faces its star while the other remains in darkness—computer models suggest that parts of the planet could still maintain temperatures suitable for liquid water.

The planet’s surface conditions are expected to differ from Earth’s, but the existence of an atmosphere greatly improves its potential to support stable environmental conditions over long periods.

Why the Discovery Matters

Finding an atmosphere around a rocky planet in the habitable zone represents one of the biggest milestones in modern astronomy. While thousands of exoplanets have been discovered over the past three decades, confirming atmospheres around small rocky worlds has proven extremely difficult because their signals are faint compared to those of larger gas giants.

Scientists consider atmospheres essential because they regulate planetary temperatures, protect surfaces from harmful radiation, and may contain chemical signatures that hint at biological activity.

The discovery demonstrates that rocky planets orbiting red dwarf stars can retain atmospheres despite intense ultraviolet radiation that was previously believed to strip away atmospheric gases over time.

Future Studies Could Search for Signs of Life

Although the current research does not provide evidence of extraterrestrial life, it opens the door for more detailed investigations. Scientists now plan to examine the atmosphere for molecules such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and methane.

Future observations using advanced facilities, including NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and next-generation ground-based observatories, may reveal the atmosphere’s full chemical composition. These studies could help determine whether the planet has oceans, clouds, weather systems, or even biosignatures associated with living organisms.

Researchers also noted that a neighboring planet in the same system, LHS 1140 c, appears to lack an atmosphere, highlighting how different planetary environments can evolve even around the same star.

A New Chapter in the Search for Another Earth

The confirmation of an atmosphere around LHS 1140 b represents a major step toward identifying worlds capable of supporting life beyond Earth. Scientists believe the discovery will reshape future exoplanet research by providing an ideal target for atmospheric studies.

While many questions remain unanswered, the finding offers compelling evidence that Earth-like rocky planets can preserve atmospheres over billions of years. As telescope technology continues to improve, LHS 1140 b is expected to remain one of the most closely studied planets in humanity’s ongoing search for another habitable world—and perhaps, one day, evidence of life beyond our Solar System.
