The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, marking a major step toward making digital identity verification faster, smoother and more secure.
New SDK Brings Face Authentication Inside Mobile Apps
The newly introduced Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK enables ecosystem partners to integrate UIDAI’s Face Authentication capability directly into native Android and iOS applications. The move is aimed at creating a seamless authentication experience in which users can complete Aadhaar-based verification without leaving the application they are already using.
The ready-to-use software development kit is designed to simplify integration for banks, fintech companies, government departments and other organisations. It incorporates AI/ML-powered liveness detection and anti-spoofing capabilities while supporting secure handling and encryption of authentication data.
The technology is designed to operate across consumer smartphones, potentially allowing organisations to offer Aadhaar Face Authentication-enabled services without requiring additional biometric hardware.
Sandbox Offers Secure Testing Environment
Alongside the SDK, UIDAI introduced the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox, providing organisations with a controlled environment to integrate, test and validate the complete authentication journey before moving to production.
Developers and quality assurance teams can use the Sandbox to test several stages of the process, including user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness verification, authentication, error handling and response validation.
The environment also allows teams to test potential failure scenarios. These include invalid digital signatures, network disruptions, authentication timeouts and attempted spoofing, helping organisations assess how their applications respond under different conditions before deployment.
Simplifying Banking and Fintech Onboarding
The launch addresses a long-standing requirement from the banking and fintech ecosystem for a more convenient Aadhaar authentication process that can operate directly within an organisation’s mobile application.

Previously, users seeking to complete Aadhaar Face Authentication through another application often needed the FaceRD app to support the process. This could add another step to the onboarding journey and make the experience dependent on the presence of an additional application.
With the new SDK, organisations can integrate Face Authentication directly into their own apps. A customer using a banking, insurance or brokerage application can potentially complete Aadhaar authentication without switching to a separate application.
The change is expected to reduce friction during digital onboarding while supporting organisations seeking to provide a more unified customer experience.
Aadhaar Face Authentication Crosses 500 Crore Transactions
UIDAI’s indigenous AI/ML-driven Face Authentication technology was launched in 2021 and has since processed more than 500 crore transactions.
The technology has been adopted by nearly 200 entities across the public and private sectors. These include Union Government ministries and departments, State Governments, banks, non-banking financial companies, telecom operators, brokerage firms and certifying authorities.

Its role in strengthening digital authentication has also received national recognition. The technology was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2023 in the Innovation category.
Technology Supports Major Government Services
Aadhaar Face Authentication is already being used across a range of public-facing services and welfare programmes.
Among its applications is the submission of Digital Life Certificates through Jeevan Pramaan, helping pensioners complete authentication digitally. The technology is also used for Ayushman Bharat beneficiary onboarding and authentication under Direct Benefit Transfer schemes.
Other applications include Aadhaar-enabled payments, SIM activation through e-KYC and beneficiary authentication for programmes such as PM e-Drive, PM Awas Yojana and PM Kisan.
The expansion of the technology through the new SDK could allow more organisations to incorporate Face Authentication into their digital platforms while maintaining a focus on security and user convenience.
UIDAI Launches Onboarding Playbook for BFSI Sector
UIDAI also unveiled a “Playbook on Ease of Onboarding” during the event. The guide is intended to assist entities in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector seeking to join the UIDAI authentication ecosystem.
The playbook is designed to provide guidance for organisations using Aadhaar-based authentication for identity verification involving customers, employees and other business partners.
By combining the new SDK, testing Sandbox and onboarding guidance, UIDAI aims to make the integration process more accessible for organisations looking to adopt secure digital identity verification.
Focus on Seamless and Secure Digital Identity
The launch of the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox represents an important development in UIDAI’s efforts to expand digital authentication capabilities.
By bringing Face Authentication directly into mobile applications and providing organisations with a dedicated testing environment, the initiative is expected to streamline integration and reduce complexity for both developers and users.
For the fintech and banking ecosystem in particular, the new tools could help create shorter, app-based onboarding journeys while supporting secure authentication and wider adoption of digital identity services.
