Ukraine launched one of its largest-ever aerial offensives against Russia, sending more than 1,000 drones into Russian territory overnight in a massive escalation that heavily targeted Moscow and surrounding areas. Russian authorities said hundreds of drones were intercepted while approaching the capital, with the assault damaging an oil refinery and residential infrastructure.
The attack came on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections and was described by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin as the largest drone assault yet against the Russian capital. Russian officials said the offensive was unprecedented in scale and claimed that the attack failed to disrupt the voting process.
Over 1,000 Drones Target Russian Territory
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air-defence systems intercepted about 1,100 Ukrainian drones across the country, including over Crimea and the Black Sea. Moscow officials separately reported that hundreds of drones were heading toward the capital.
Sobyanin said around 450 drones were destroyed while approaching Moscow. The large-scale aerial assault forced authorities to activate extensive air-defence measures across Moscow and the surrounding region.
The precise number of drones launched by Ukraine remains difficult to independently verify because the figures have been released primarily by Russian authorities. Ukrainian officials have not provided a comprehensive independent count of the total number of drones involved.
Moscow Oil Refinery Damaged in Major Strike
One of the most significant reported targets was the Moscow Oil Refinery. Russian authorities said the facility sustained damage during the overnight attack.
A residential building was also reportedly hit, highlighting the risks created by the growing use of long-range drones deep inside Russian territory. The strikes caused disruption and prompted emergency responses in several parts of the Moscow region.
Russian officials said two people were killed and 20 others injured across the wider Moscow region. Authorities identified the victims as a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, according to reports.
The casualty figures have varied in early reports, and further official updates could alter the initial assessment.
Zelenskyy Confirms Strike on Energy Infrastructure
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck Russian energy and logistics infrastructure.
Zelenskyy said the operation was directed at facilities that generate revenue supporting Russia’s war effort. He also referred to the use of Ukrainian-developed long-range weapons alongside drones.
According to the Ukrainian president, the operation included domestically developed missile systems, including the Flamingo cruise missile and Pelican short-range ballistic missile, as well as long-range drones. The claims could not independently be verified in full.
Ukraine has increasingly developed its domestic drone and missile capabilities as it seeks to conduct attacks against military, energy and logistical targets deep inside Russian territory.
Attack Comes During Russia’s Parliamentary Elections
The timing of the offensive added another layer of significance to the attack. The strikes occurred as Russia was conducting the third and final day of its parliamentary elections.

Moscow Mayor Sobyanin said the attack was intended to interfere with the electoral process but claimed Russian authorities successfully prevented that from happening.
Russia was also conducting voting in Crimea and in four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed. Kyiv considers those votes illegitimate, while the international status of the territories remains disputed.
The election timing has therefore become an important part of the Russian government’s account of the attack, although Ukraine has not publicly confirmed that disrupting the election was its objective.
Drone Warfare Intensifies Across Russia and Ukraine
The latest offensive underscores how drone warfare has become an increasingly important component of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Ukraine has expanded its ability to manufacture and deploy long-range unmanned aircraft capable of reaching targets hundreds of kilometres from the battlefield. Russia has also continued conducting large-scale drone and missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The conflict has consequently moved beyond conventional front-line combat, with energy facilities, logistics networks and military infrastructure increasingly becoming targets.
The attack on Moscow also demonstrated the challenge posed by large-scale drone swarms. Even when air-defence systems intercept a substantial number of incoming drones, the sheer volume can place pressure on defensive networks and increase the possibility of damage from debris or individual aircraft reaching populated areas.
Separate Russian Strike Kills Three Near Kyiv
While the Moscow-region attack resulted in two reported deaths, a separate Russian overnight drone strike near Kyiv killed a mother and her two children, according to Ukrainian emergency authorities.
The simultaneous casualties on both sides underline the continuing human cost of the aerial escalation. Russia and Ukraine have both repeatedly accused the other of targeting civilian areas, while each side maintains that its military operations focus on strategic or military objectives.
The latest wave of attacks comes despite continuing international efforts to reduce hostilities. Long-range strikes against energy and logistics infrastructure have remained a major feature of the conflict.
With more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones reported across Russian territory and hundreds directed toward Moscow, the latest assault marks a significant expansion in the scale of Ukraine’s deep-strike campaign.
