More than 1,200 Indian and American soldiers took part in intensive joint military training during Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2024, strengthening battlefield coordination, operational readiness and interoperability between the two armies. The exercise was conducted at the Foreign Training Node of the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan from September 9 to 22, 2024.

India-US Forces Test Combat Readiness

The 20th edition of Yudh Abhyas brought Indian and US Army personnel together for realistic field training designed to improve their ability to operate jointly under demanding conditions.

According to India’s Ministry of Defence, more than 1,200 troops from the two countries were engaged in tactical activities aimed at sharpening firepower, endurance and battlefield coordination. The exercise focused particularly on enhancing interoperability and developing greater synergy between the participating forces.

The drills were held against the challenging terrain of Rajasthan, providing soldiers with an environment in which they could test their physical endurance, tactical decision-making and ability to coordinate during simulated operational situations.

Tactical Drills and Quick-Response Operations

The exercise featured a range of tactical activities, including quick-response drills, joint planning and combined field training. These exercises were intended to help troops from both armies understand each other’s operational procedures and improve coordination during complex missions.

The Indian Army said the training was aimed at strengthening interoperability and enhancing the joint capabilities of the two forces. Such exercises provide an opportunity for personnel to exchange operational experience while developing common approaches to battlefield challenges.

The emphasis on realistic training also allows troops to evaluate communication, planning and execution under conditions that closely resemble demanding operational environments.

Rajasthan Provides a Tough Training Environment

The Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan served as the principal location for the exercise. The arid and rugged landscape offered an appropriate setting for soldiers to test endurance and tactical skills.

The exercise began on September 9 and was scheduled to continue until September 22, with personnel from both countries participating in different stages of the training.

The Rajasthan phase was particularly significant because it exposed US personnel to India’s desert environment while allowing Indian troops to work closely with American soldiers in field conditions.

Around 600 US soldiers participated in the exercise alongside their Indian counterparts. During a break from military training, American troops also visited the historic Junagarh Fort in Bikaner, where they were taken on guided tours of the heritage complex.

Focus on Interoperability and Joint Capability

A central objective of Yudh Abhyas has been to strengthen the ability of the Indian and US armies to work together effectively. Regular bilateral exercises allow both sides to share tactics, techniques and operational experience while improving coordination between personnel.

The latest drills demonstrated how increasingly sophisticated military cooperation between India and the United States extends beyond equipment and strategic dialogue to practical, field-level training.

The exercise also provided opportunities for troops to develop familiarity with each other’s methods of planning and executing tactical operations. This is particularly important when forces from different military systems operate together during multinational or humanitarian missions.

Strengthening India-US Defence Partnership

Yudh Abhyas is part of the broader and expanding defence relationship between India and the United States. The exercise has evolved over the years from relatively smaller training activities into a major bilateral Army exercise involving increasingly complex scenarios.

The 2024 edition represented the 20th iteration of the exercise and reflected the continued emphasis both countries place on military interoperability and professional exchanges.

Beyond tactical training, such exercises contribute to building mutual confidence among soldiers and commanders. They also create opportunities for the two militaries to understand each other’s strengths, procedures and operational cultures.

Women Soldiers Take Part in Key Roles

Women personnel from both India and the United States also played important roles during Yudh Abhyas 2024. The Indian Army highlighted their participation across different phases of the exercise, including tactical and leadership responsibilities.

A Strong Signal of Military Cooperation

The Rajasthan drills showcased the practical depth of India-US military engagement. With more than 1,200 soldiers participating, Yudh Abhyas 2024 provided a demanding platform for both armies to test endurance, sharpen tactical skills and improve joint operational capabilities.

The exercise ultimately served not only as a training opportunity but also as a visible demonstration of the expanding defence partnership between New Delhi and Washington. Through repeated exercises and field-level cooperation, the two militaries continue to build greater trust, coordination and readiness for complex security challenges.
