Iranian media reported multiple explosions near Kharg Island, one of the country’s most important oil-export hubs, on Saturday, September 5, shortly after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning that Washington could strike Iran’s heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site.
The cause of the explosions near Kharg remained unclear, and Iranian authorities had not officially confirmed that the island itself had been attacked at the time of reporting. The development nevertheless triggered fresh concern because of Kharg Island’s strategic importance to Iran’s energy infrastructure and its location in the Gulf.
Explosions Reported Near Iran’s Major Oil Hub
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that several blasts were heard in the vicinity of Kharg Island. The island hosts a major Iranian oil terminal and plays a central role in the country’s crude export network.
Reuters, citing a Fars correspondent on the island, reported that explosions could be heard but there was no visible smoke rising from the area. This left the exact nature and location of the incident uncertain. Iranian officials had not immediately confirmed reports of an attack.
The uncertainty was heightened by separate reports concerning an Iranian tanker. State-affiliated Nournews, citing unconfirmed local reports, said a tanker had been hit by a missile and suggested that it may have been targeted in a US strike.
However, those claims had not been independently verified, and there was no immediate official confirmation from either Washington or Tehran that the United States had carried out an attack near Kharg Island.
Trump Issues Fresh Warning Over Pickaxe Mountain
The reported explosions came only hours after Trump warned that the United States could soon target Pickaxe Mountain, a deeply fortified site near Iran’s damaged Natanz uranium-enrichment facility.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said Washington could strike the facility “very soon” if it believed activity there posed a threat. He also claimed that US intelligence was closely monitoring movements at the site and across Iran.
Pickaxe Mountain has attracted increasing international attention because of its underground infrastructure. The facility is understood to contain two deeply buried tunnel complexes, making it considerably harder to attack than conventional above-ground nuclear installations.
A Wall Street Journal report cited by Hindustan Times said Israeli intelligence believes Iran may have moved thousands of centrifuges into the deeply buried facility. If confirmed, such a development would make Pickaxe Mountain an especially sensitive target in the ongoing confrontation over Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Potential Strike Could Trigger Major Escalation
Any US attack on Pickaxe Mountain could represent a significant escalation in the military campaign against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Unlike conventional targets, a deeply buried installation presents major operational challenges. The facility’s underground design is intended to provide protection against conventional aerial bombardment, meaning any attempt to destroy it could require a more extensive military operation.
The latest developments also come against the backdrop of continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran, with military strikes and threats repeatedly raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.

Kharg Island carries additional significance because of its role in Iran’s oil trade. Trump Calls Iran Conflict ‘Small Potatoes’
Despite issuing another warning about a possible strike on a sensitive Iranian nuclear site, Trump simultaneously sought to downplay the scale of the conflict.
The US president described the Iran confrontation as “small potatoes” for the United States while backing Vice President JD Vance’s position that the ongoing fighting should not necessarily be described as a war.
Trump said American strikes had become intermittent and referred to the situation as a “military conflict”, arguing that it was not a major war by historical standards.
His remarks came despite the significant financial and human costs associated with the US military campaign. Hindustan Times reported that the conflict had cost American taxpayers more than $37.5 billion and resulted in the deaths of 18 US servicemen.
Kharg Island Becomes Fresh Flashpoint
The reported blasts near Kharg Island therefore come at a particularly sensitive moment. On one side, Washington is threatening possible action against a heavily protected Iranian nuclear facility; on the other, unexplained explosions have been reported close to a crucial Iranian energy hub.
At present, there is no confirmed evidence establishing that the Kharg explosions were the result of a US attack. The absence of visible smoke and the lack of an immediate official confirmation leave the incident unresolved.
But with tensions already elevated, any confirmed strike involving Kharg Island or Pickaxe Mountain could sharply raise the stakes. The combination of Iran’s nuclear programme, its oil-export infrastructure and the strategic waterways of the Gulf means further military escalation could have consequences extending far beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation.
