Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message for peace during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday.
With the Russia-Ukraine war continuing to dominate global diplomatic discussions, Modi called for an end to prolonged hostilities and emphasised the need for a peaceful settlement. He underlined India’s consistent support for diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.
The meeting between Modi and Putin also focused on the broader India-Russia strategic partnership, including cooperation in key sectors such as energy, defence, trade, innovation and space.
PM Modi Calls for an End to the Ukraine War
During the meeting, Modi made a direct appeal for a transition from prolonged warfare towards peace. He argued that the continuing conflict has consequences extending beyond the countries directly involved and affects the wider international community.
“We must move away from endless war towards an end to the war,” Modi said, stressing that ending the conflict was essential for humanity’s welfare.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s long-standing position that dialogue and peaceful negotiations should remain central to resolving international disputes.
According to Modi, India has repeatedly discussed the Ukraine conflict with Putin and has consistently backed initiatives aimed at achieving peace.
He further said that every additional day of fighting carries a human cost, while progress towards peace can create fresh hope for people affected by conflict.
‘Land of Gandhi and Buddha’ Sends Message of Peace
In one of the most significant moments of the meeting, Modi invoked India’s civilisational traditions of non-violence and peace while speaking about the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“The land of Gandhi and the land of Buddha share a single message: the path of peace,” Modi said.
The reference to Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha reinforced India’s diplomatic message that conflicts should ultimately be resolved through dialogue rather than continued confrontation.
Modi also described an early peaceful settlement as a global humanitarian necessity, positioning India’s approach as one that supports engagement with all sides.
His remarks come as India continues to maintain close strategic ties with Russia while also advocating a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis. New Delhi has sought to preserve its independent foreign-policy position while encouraging diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Modi and Putin Discuss India-Russia Strategic Partnership

The Russian president also pointed to expanding educational, cultural and tourism links between the two countries. He said the number of Indian students studying in Russia had risen substantially in recent years, reaching around 40,000.
Putin’s Upcoming India Visit Gains Significance
The meeting also carried significance because Putin is expected to travel to New Delhi for the upcoming BRICS summit.
Modi invited the Russian president to attend the summit and said India was looking forward to welcoming him and his delegation. He expressed confidence that Putin’s visit would further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation within the BRICS framework.
The upcoming BRICS meeting is expected to provide another important platform for discussions involving major emerging economies and global geopolitical issues.
For India, Putin’s expected visit also provides an opportunity to maintain high-level engagement with Moscow while reinforcing New Delhi’s broader diplomatic outreach.
