Jaishankar’s Moscow visit was scheduled for August 23-24 at the invitation of Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. Besides co-chairing the intergovernmental commission, Jaishankar was also expected to hold discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on regional and global developments.
The visit assumes significance as India and Russia seek to maintain regular high-level dialogue on issues affecting their strategic interests.
The two countries have maintained close diplomatic engagement for decades, and their relationship has continued despite pressure created by geopolitical tensions and changes in international alignments.
