India achieved another major milestone in its quest for self-reliance in defence technology as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Indian Air Force (IAF), successfully conducted flight-tests of the indigenous RudraM-II air-to-surface missile.

The tests were carried out from a frontline fighter aircraft and successfully validated the missile’s performance across its full operational range. According to the Ministry of Defence, all mission objectives were achieved, including the missile’s guidance, navigation, control systems and terminal accuracy. The trials confirmed the weapon’s capability to engage and destroy a variety of enemy targets with high precision.

RudraM-II is an indigenously developed next-generation air-to-surface missile designed to provide the Indian Air Force with a potent stand-off strike capability. The missile can be launched from fighter aircraft against a wide range of land-based targets, enabling the armed forces to strike enemy assets from safe distances while remaining outside hostile air defence zones.

The successful tests demonstrated the missile’s ability to accurately hit designated targets under varied operational conditions. Advanced onboard systems, including indigenous guidance and navigation technologies, functioned as expected during the flight, validating the robustness of the weapon system.

Defence officials noted that the achievement reflects India’s growing expertise in developing sophisticated missile technologies. The programme is part of the broader effort to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported weapon systems.

The trials were witnessed by senior officials from DRDO, the Indian Air Force and defence industry partners involved in the missile’s development. Scientists and engineers associated with the project hailed the successful tests as a major step toward operational induction.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Air Force and industry partners for the successful flight-tests. He said the achievement would significantly enhance the strike capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces and further strengthen India’s defence preparedness. He also praised the teams involved in the development of the indigenous missile system.

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, also commended the scientists, engineers and industry partners who contributed to the programme. He described the successful tests as a testament to the country’s advancing technological capabilities in the defence sector.

The RudraM-II programme forms a crucial component of India’s ongoing efforts to develop advanced precision-guided weapons under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. As geopolitical and security challenges evolve, such indigenous systems are expected to play a vital role in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the armed forces.

The successful validation of RudraM-II adds to a series of recent achievements by DRDO and underscores India’s growing capability to design, develop and produce world-class missile systems domestically. The development is expected to provide a significant boost to the nation’s defence preparedness and strategic deterrence capabilities.
