In a sharp reciprocal move amid strained India-Pakistan relations, Indian authorities on Thursday removed barricades, queue-management structures and other installations erected outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. Officials said the structures were found to have extended beyond the mission’s approved boundary.
The action came just three days after Pakistani authorities removed security barricades and parking poles positioned outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The timing has given the Delhi operation a strong diplomatic tit-for-tat dimension, although Indian authorities have officially cited boundary violations as the reason for removing the structures.
Barricades Removed Outside Pakistan High Commission
Authorities used heavy machinery, including a JCB, to dismantle structures and barriers placed along the lane outside the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi’s diplomatic enclave. The installations included barricades and queue-management arrangements near the visa section of the Pakistani mission.
Officials said the structures were located beyond the designated perimeter of the diplomatic compound. As a result, the agencies concerned moved in to clear the area and remove installations that were not within the approved boundary.
Visuals from the site showed sections of metal fencing, roofing material, gates and other structures being removed. Debris was seen scattered around the area following the demolition operation.
The main entrance of the Pakistan High Commission remained intact. Parts of the compound’s perimeter, including fencing, were also still visible after the external structures were cleared.
Action Follows Islamabad’s Move
The Delhi operation assumes greater significance because it followed Pakistan’s decision to dismantle security barricades outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on Monday.
According to reports, Pakistani authorities removed security barriers and parking poles outside the Indian diplomatic mission despite a formal protest from the Indian side. Three days later, similar external security-related installations outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi were removed.
The sequence has been widely interpreted as reciprocal diplomatic action between the two countries, whose relations have remained tense.
However, officials in Delhi have maintained that the structures removed outside the Pakistan mission were beyond its approved boundary. This provides the stated administrative basis for the operation rather than formally describing it as a diplomatic retaliation.
Visa Area Structures Also Cleared
Among the installations removed were queue-management structures near the Pakistan High Commission’s visa section.
The removal of these structures changed the appearance of the area outside the diplomatic mission, with metal frames, fencing and construction material left behind following the operation.
Reports said the visa-related service area remained visible after the demolition. The action, however, was focused on external structures and installations rather than the main diplomatic building itself.
The development comes at a time when diplomatic interactions between New Delhi and Islamabad remain particularly sensitive, with even relatively small administrative decisions around diplomatic missions attracting wider attention.

During his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Gor described the Union Territory as an “important part of India” and indicated that the United States would reconsider its travel advisories for the region. He also praised the beauty of Jammu and Kashmir and spoke positively about the security situation there.
Pakistan reacted strongly to the remarks and summoned the US chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to lodge a formal protest.
There is no official confirmation that the removal of structures outside the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi was directly linked to Pakistan’s reaction to Gor’s comments. The immediate official explanation remains that the structures had exceeded the approved boundary.
Nevertheless, the timing has drawn attention because it follows Islamabad’s recent action against security installations outside India’s diplomatic mission.
