West Bengal has been left shaken by a devastating hotel fire in Tarapith, Birbhum district, in which eight pilgrims lost their lives, prompting an emotional response from Suvendu Adhikari. Expressing deep anguish over the tragedy, Adhikari said the state government would take strict action against anyone found responsible and assured affected families of all necessary support.
The victims had travelled to the famous temple town of Tarapith to offer prayers on the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan. The tragedy unfolded while the pilgrims were staying at a hotel, turning a religious visit into a devastating loss for several families.
According to the casualty list shared following the incident, eight people have been identified as deceased, while 34 people were rescued and survived. One additional person was rescued and placed under treatment.
Suvendu Adhikari Expresses Deep Grief
Reacting to the incident, Adhikari said he was “deeply pained” by the loss of lives and described the fire as an extremely tragic incident involving pilgrims who had come to Tarapith for religious purposes.
He conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, saying that words could not adequately describe the grief caused by the tragedy.
The incident has particularly intensified concerns because the victims were pilgrims who had travelled to Tarapith during an important religious period. The town witnesses a substantial increase in visitors during Shravan, placing additional pressure on hotels, roads, emergency services and other local infrastructure.
Police Rescue Many Pilgrims
According to Adhikari, the police administration responded quickly after the fire broke out and managed to rescue a substantial number of people trapped inside the hotel.
However, despite the rescue efforts, eight lives could not be saved.
The rescue records show that 34 people survived after being evacuated from the affected premises. The survivors include people from different parts of West Bengal as well as Meghalaya and other locations.
One additional rescued person, identified as Rajesh Sharma from Alipurduar, was listed as being under treatment.
Adhikari stressed that the administration remained focused on the condition of the survivors and on providing assistance to families affected by the tragedy.
Senior Officials At Tarapith Fire Site
Adhikari said senior officials and public representatives were present at the site and closely supervising the rescue and relief operations.
The Superintendent of Police and District Magistrate of the area are overseeing the situation, while local MLA Dhruba Saha and Minister of State for the Fire Department Koushik Chowdhury are also present.
Their presence, according to Adhikari, is aimed at ensuring that rescue operations, medical assistance and coordination with affected families are carried out without delay.
He further said the administration was coordinating with the Government of Meghalaya and the local administration in Alipurduar, as several of those affected were from these regions.
Government Orders Probe Into Fire
Adhikari said the state government had taken strict measures to determine the root cause of the deadly fire.
The investigation is expected to examine how the blaze started, whether adequate fire-safety arrangements were available at the hotel and whether any lapses contributed to the deaths.
The focus will also be on determining whether the hotel had adequate emergency exits, firefighting equipment and evacuation arrangements for guests.
The cause of the fire has not been conclusively established, and authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the blaze through a detailed investigation.
‘Those Responsible Will Not Be Spared’
One of the strongest parts of Adhikari’s statement was his assurance that accountability would follow the investigation.

He made it clear that anyone found responsible for the tragedy would face legal consequences.
Adhikari said those responsible would “not be spared” and would be dealt with strictly according to law. His statement comes amid growing concerns over safety standards at hotels and accommodation facilities in pilgrimage destinations.
The assurance is particularly significant because Tarapith attracts large numbers of devotees, especially during major religious occasions. Any failure to maintain adequate fire-safety standards could have serious consequences when hotels operate at high occupancy.
Compensation To Be Announced
Adhikari also assured the bereaved families that appropriate compensation for the victims would be announced in due course.
He said the state government would stand with the affected families during the difficult period and work with the administrations concerned to ensure they receive necessary assistance.
The immediate priorities remain the treatment of survivors, identification and repatriation of the deceased, support for their families and a thorough investigation into the fire.
Tarapith Tragedy Raises Safety Questions
The deaths have cast a shadow over Tarapith during what should have been a major period of religious observance. Pilgrims had travelled to the temple town with the intention of offering prayers, but the hotel fire resulted in a devastating loss of life.
