A stampede-like situation at Ujjain’s Mahakal Nagchandreshwar Temple on Monday triggered panic among devotees and left several people injured, raising fresh concerns over crowd management during one of the city’s busiest religious occasions.
The incident occurred as a large number of devotees gathered at the Mahakaleshwar temple complex for darshan at the Nagchandreshwar Temple. According to an injured devotee quoted by news agency ANI, people had already spent several hours waiting in queues before the situation suddenly deteriorated.
The devotee, identified as Sagar, said he had been waiting for around seven to eight hours before reaching Harsiddhi Chauraha. He and other devotees were then reportedly held there for nearly two more hours as the crowd continued to grow.
The situation became particularly tense around the time of the aarti, when the movement of devotees was restricted. According to Sagar, the crowd became increasingly dense before barricades were suddenly opened.
The abrupt movement triggered a rush among devotees. Barricades reportedly collapsed under pressure, while a tent also fell, leaving people trapped amid the chaos.
Devotee Suffers Leg Fracture
Sagar said he became trapped beneath a fallen barricade during the incident. Both his legs were caught, and he suffered a fracture in one of them.
He also alleged that immediate assistance was difficult to obtain. According to his account, only one person came forward to help him after the crowd surge. He was eventually carried to a health camp and subsequently taken to a hospital by ambulance.
His account highlights the difficulties faced by injured devotees during the sudden crowd movement and has raised questions about the effectiveness of emergency response arrangements at the site.
Mother Describes Frantic Search for Help
Another account came from Meenu, whose son was admitted to hospital after being caught beneath a barricade.
She said the incident happened at Harsiddhi Chauraha as devotees were moving towards the Nath Chandreshwar Temple for darshan. According to her, her son became trapped when the stampede-like situation erupted.
Meenu alleged that people struggled to receive assistance immediately after the incident. She said one person eventually helped carry her son to safety and medical care.
The accounts of the injured and their families underline the fear and confusion that unfolded when the crowd suddenly surged.
Huge Devotee Footfall Raises Safety Concerns
The incident comes amid an exceptionally heavy influx of devotees at Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple. The temple witnessed a record footfall of around 6.57 lakh devotees on Independence Day, according to temple officials, indicating the enormous crowds that the pilgrimage centre has been handling in recent days.
The Nagchandreshwar shrine attracts particularly large crowds during Nag Panchami because the deity is traditionally available for darshan to devotees on this special occasion.
Authorities had also undertaken preparations to manage the anticipated rush. On Monday, more than 300 security guards reportedly participated in a load-bearing test of a newly constructed 91-foot foot overbridge intended to carry devotees towards the Nagchandreshwar Temple

Despite such preparations, the incident has highlighted the challenge of managing sudden crowd movements, especially when thousands of devotees are concentrated in restricted spaces.

The latest report on the Ujjain incident described several devotees as injured but did not report any deaths in connection with the Mahakal Nagchandreshwar Temple crowd surge. The focus has therefore remained on treating those injured and examining how the situation escalated.
