At least seven pilgrims were killed after a devastating fire broke out at a five-storey hotel near the famous Tarapith Temple in Birbhum, West Bengal, early Monday morning. Several other guests suffered injuries and were rushed to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The incident has cast a pall of grief over one of West Bengal’s prominent pilgrimage destinations.
The victims had reportedly travelled to Tarapith to offer prayers during the holy Shravan month. The blaze broke out at the hotel’s lower level while many guests were asleep, allowing smoke and flames to spread rapidly through the building before occupants could fully understand what was happening.
Fire Spreads Rapidly as Guests Remain Asleep
The incident occurred at Hotel Bideshini, situated near a pond and within a short distance of Tarapith police station. According to preliminary information, the fire may have originated from an electrical fault and quickly spread to other parts of the building.
Many guests, including children, were inside their rooms when the fire began. Thick smoke reportedly filled the hotel, creating panic among the occupants. With visibility severely reduced and flames spreading through the lower section, several people became trapped inside their rooms.
The situation became particularly dangerous because the fire had already gained momentum before many guests could react. Panic spread through the building as residents attempted to find safe routes out of the hotel.
Police and Firefighters Launch Rescue Operation
Because the hotel was located close to Tarapith police station, police personnel were able to reach the scene quickly. Officers from both Tarapith and Rampurhat police stations joined the emergency response, while firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze.
Firefighters eventually brought the flames under control, but a substantial portion of the hotel’s lower floor had already been damaged. Several guests suffered burns, while others reportedly became ill after inhaling smoke.
The injured were evacuated from the hotel and transported to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital. Authorities continued rescue efforts as emergency teams searched the premises for anyone who might still be trapped.
Electrical Fault Suspected Behind Blaze
A preliminary assessment suggested that an electrical malfunction may have triggered the fire. Hotel authorities reportedly said that an electrical component suddenly burst around 4:30 a.m., after which flames erupted.
According to the hotel owner, night-duty staff immediately attempted to activate fire extinguishers and disconnect the electrical supply. However, flames reportedly spread to fibre-based decorative materials inside the building, intensifying the blaze.
The resulting smoke rose through the five-storey structure, making evacuation extremely difficult.
The exact cause of the fire, however, will need to be established through a detailed investigation. Questions are also likely to be raised over the hotel’s fire-safety arrangements, emergency exits and evacuation procedures.
Survivors Describe Terrifying Escape
The incident left survivors traumatised. One pilgrim travelling with his family from Baduria in North 24 Parganas described being trapped inside his room as flames approached.
According to his account, he and his wife, along with their two children, remained trapped for around 45 minutes. With no usable window in the room, they reportedly tried to find an alternative way out through the bathroom.
The family repeatedly contacted Tarapith police for assistance. Police eventually broke open the door and rescued them. The survivor’s mother remained unconscious following the incident, while his sister also sustained injuries.
The account highlights the confusion and desperation faced by guests as thick smoke and fire blocked conventional escape routes.
Evacuation Difficulties Raise Safety Questions
Several guests staying on the upper floors also became trapped because the fire had engulfed the lower portion of the building. Some reportedly threw belongings down in panic while waiting for help.
The hotel reportedly had a rear exit, but some guests were unable to locate it amid the darkness, smoke and confusion. Many instead attempted to leave through the reception area, where they encountered flames and suffered burns.
The circumstances have intensified concerns over fire safety at hotels located around major pilgrimage centres. Tarapith attracts large numbers of devotees throughout the year, making effective fire-prevention systems, clearly marked emergency exits and evacuation plans particularly important.
Death Toll and Identities
The death toll stood at seven pilgrims, while several others were injured. The identities of those who died had not been confirmed at the time of the report. Pilgrims from different parts of West Bengal, including Malda and Alipurduar, were among those staying at the hotel.
The tragedy has shocked pilgrims, residents and visitors in Tarapith. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire, including its suspected electrical origin and the hotel’s safety infrastructure.
As rescue and medical efforts continue, the devastating incident has raised renewed questions about emergency preparedness and fire safety in hotels serving large numbers of pilgrims in West Bengal’s religious tourism hubs.
