The ongoing monsoon season has intensified the flood crisis in Assam, where the death toll has climbed to 75, making it one of the worst weather disasters of the year. Authorities said continuous rainfall over the past several days has submerged large parts of the state, affecting more than 3.32 lakh people across multiple districts. Relief and rescue teams remain on high alert as rivers continue to flow above the danger mark in several locations.
Government agencies have expanded rescue operations with the support of disaster response forces, the Army, and local volunteers. Temporary relief camps are sheltering thousands of displaced residents who have been forced to leave their homes after floodwaters inundated villages and agricultural land.
Officials are closely monitoring embankments and vulnerable riverbanks as forecasts suggest more rainfall over the coming days, raising fears of fresh flooding in low-lying regions.
IMD Forecasts Active Monsoon Across India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the southwest monsoon will remain active over a large part of the country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several regions, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Northeast India.
According to meteorologists, a deep depression moving across central India is expected to strengthen rainfall activity. The weather system is likely to bring intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and localized flooding in many urban and rural areas.
The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and nearby coastal waters due to rough sea conditions.
Gujarat And Maharashtra Continue To Receive Heavy Rain
Several districts in Gujarat and Maharashtra have witnessed persistent rainfall, leading to waterlogging, overflowing rivers, and disruption of transportation. Local administrations have deployed emergency teams in flood-prone areas while monitoring dams and reservoirs.
Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow evacuation orders if issued. Civic authorities are also clearing drainage channels to reduce urban flooding.
Transport services in some areas have experienced delays because of waterlogged roads and poor visibility caused by continuous rainfall.
Delhi-NCR Likely To Witness Intense Showers
The national capital and surrounding NCR regions are also expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Weather experts have predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds that could affect daily commuting.
Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and remain cautious near waterlogged roads and under construction sites.
Municipal agencies are preparing emergency response teams to deal with possible traffic congestion, fallen trees, and localized flooding.
Northeast Remains Highly Vulnerable
Apart from Assam, several northeastern states including Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall. The IMD has maintained heavy rainfall warnings for many of these regions due to active monsoon conditions.
Experts warn that saturated soil conditions increase the likelihood of landslides, flash floods, and riverbank erosion. Residents living near rivers and hilly areas have been urged to stay vigilant.
Rescue And Relief Efforts Intensify
State governments and disaster management authorities are working round the clock to provide food, drinking water, medical assistance, and temporary shelter to affected families. Rescue boats and emergency personnel continue evacuating stranded residents from flooded villages.
