NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly urged Union Cabinet ministers to strengthen their presence on Instagram and increase engagement with young citizens through interactive digital content. The advice came during a Cabinet meeting where the Prime Minister emphasized that social media has become one of the most effective platforms for reaching India’s younger population.

Focus on Youth-Centric Digital Communication

According to reports, Prime Minister Modi asked ministers how many of them actively use Instagram and encouraged them to become more visible on the platform. He stressed that the country’s youth spend considerable time on social media and that elected representatives should communicate with them in ways that are familiar and engaging.

The Prime Minister is said to have encouraged ministers not only to post updates about government initiatives but also to interact directly with citizens through creative formats such as reels, short videos, and other digital content. The objective, according to reports, is to make government communication more accessible, especially for younger audiences.

Reels and Interactive Content Recommended

During the meeting, Modi reportedly highlighted that simply sharing official announcements is no longer enough in today’s digital environment. Instead, ministers were encouraged to adopt modern communication methods that allow two-way interaction with citizens.

He is understood to have told ministers that young people are highly active on Instagram and that government leaders should maintain continuous engagement with them. By creating interactive posts, reels, and informative videos, ministers can explain policies, showcase development work, and address public concerns more effectively.

Digital Outreach Becomes a Governance Tool

The reported remarks underline the government’s growing emphasis on digital communication as an important aspect of governance. Social media platforms have increasingly become channels through which governments announce policies, respond to public concerns, and build direct connections with citizens without relying solely on traditional media.

The Prime Minister has consistently used digital platforms to communicate government initiatives, public messages, and national campaigns. His latest advice to Cabinet colleagues suggests that the government intends to expand this approach across ministries, ensuring that official communication reaches citizens in formats they consume daily.

Meeting Held Amid Education Debate

The Cabinet discussion took place amid continuing national attention on the examination paper leak controversy. A day earlier, Prime Minister Modi had released a video message on Instagram describing paper leaks as a serious issue affecting millions of students and their families.

He had announced that the Union Cabinet would discuss stronger legal and administrative measures to address examination irregularities. The government has indicated that stricter action and legislative initiatives are being considered to safeguard the integrity of competitive examinations.

Youth Engagement at the Centre

The Prime Minister has repeatedly highlighted the importance of India’s youth in the country’s development journey. His reported advice to ministers reflects a broader strategy of ensuring that government messaging resonates with younger generations who increasingly rely on digital platforms for information and public discourse.

Observers note that Instagram, with its emphasis on short-form videos and visual storytelling, offers ministers an opportunity to explain government schemes, answer public questions, and build stronger public participation through regular engagement.

By encouraging ministers to adopt these platforms more actively, the government aims to make policy communication more relatable and responsive to citizens’ expectations in the digital age.

Expanding Government Communication

The reported instructions also indicate an effort to modernize official outreach by integrating social media into everyday governance. Digital platforms now play a significant role in shaping public opinion, spreading awareness about welfare schemes, and encouraging citizen participation in government programmes.

Communication experts believe that ministers who maintain an active online presence can quickly share updates during emergencies, clarify misinformation, and provide real-time information about ministry initiatives.

As India’s internet and smartphone user base continues to expand, digital engagement is expected to remain an important element of public administration. The government’s renewed focus on Instagram reflects the changing nature of political communication, where accessibility, responsiveness, and interactive content are becoming increasingly important for connecting with the country’s youth.
