Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand marked a major milestone in bilateral relations, with India and New Zealand announcing 18 significant outcomes aimed at strengthening cooperation across trade, defence, security, education, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
Addressing the joint media interaction after bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, PM Modi described 2026 as a defining year for the relationship between the two countries. He highlighted the rapid progress made in economic and strategic cooperation, particularly after the conclusion of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
PM Modi outlines vision for stronger partnership
Emphasising the growing momentum in bilateral ties, Prime Minister Modi said the partnership had entered a new era with the elevation of relations to a Strategic Partnership.
“This has been a great year for the India-New Zealand partnership. Earlier this year, our nations concluded a Free Trade Agreement in record time and now, we have elevated our ties to a Strategic Partnership. Next up, we wish to double bilateral trade by 2030,” the Prime Minister said.
His remarks reflected the shared ambition of both governments to deepen economic engagement while expanding cooperation in strategic and emerging sectors.
18 outcomes to shape future cooperation
The two leaders announced 18 outcomes that will serve as a roadmap for bilateral engagement in the coming years. The agreements span defence cooperation, maritime security, trade and investment, education, agriculture, digital technology, innovation, clean energy, research, tourism and cultural exchanges.
Officials said the outcomes are designed to strengthen institutional cooperation while creating new opportunities for businesses, students, researchers and investors in both countries.
FTA expected to boost economic growth
Trade remained a key focus during the talks, with both leaders expressing confidence that the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement would significantly expand commercial ties.

The agreement is expected to improve market access, reduce trade barriers and encourage greater investment between the two economies. India and New Zealand have also set an ambitious target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030, signalling a long-term commitment to stronger economic integration.
Prime Minister Modi invited New Zealand businesses to participate in India’s expanding infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, logistics and technology sectors.
Strategic and security cooperation expands
The discussions also focused on strengthening defence and regional security cooperation. India and New Zealand agreed to enhance collaboration in maritime security, defence exchanges, cyber security and disaster management while reaffirming their support for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
Both countries stressed the importance of respecting international law and maintaining peace and stability in the region through dialogue and cooperation.
Focus on innovation and education
Innovation, research and education emerged as important pillars of the renewed partnership. The two governments agreed to promote collaboration between universities, research institutions and technology companies, with greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, digital transformation, skill development and scientific research.
The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in agriculture, food processing and sustainable development to generate long-term benefits for both nations.
Indian community praised
Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged the contribution of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, describing it as a strong bridge between the two countries. He praised the community for strengthening cultural ties and contributing significantly to New Zealand’s economy and society.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon welcomed India’s growing global influence and said New Zealand looked forward to expanding cooperation in trade, innovation, education and investment.
The visit concluded with both leaders expressing confidence that the newly announced Strategic Partnership and the 18 agreed outcomes would usher in a new phase of cooperation, with the shared goal of building a stronger, more resilient and prosperous India-New Zealand relationship by 2030.
