NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Government of West Bengal, is set to organise a major commemorative programme in Kolkata on July 6, 2026, marking the official two-year observance of the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Kesari Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The event will take place at Milan Mela Prangan and is expected to bring together senior political leaders, cultural personalities and dignitaries to pay tribute to one of India’s most influential nationalist leaders.
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will attend the programme as the Chief Guest. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will also participate in the event, along with Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal and several other distinguished guests.
Nationwide Commemoration Continues
The Government of India had announced a two-year nationwide programme in 2025 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The initiative aims to highlight his contributions as a statesman, educationist, parliamentarian and nationalist whose work left a lasting impact on India’s political, educational, industrial and cultural development.
The commemorative events have been designed to introduce younger generations to Dr. Mookerjee’s life and ideals while recognising his role in shaping modern India’s democratic institutions and national identity.
Floral Tribute at Historic Residence
The day’s programme will begin with floral tributes at Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s residence in Bhawanipore, Kolkata. Amit Shah and other dignitaries will pay their respects before proceeding to the next scheduled event.
The tribute ceremony is intended to honour Dr. Mookerjee’s lifelong dedication to public service and his contribution to nation-building. His residence holds historical significance as it reflects an important chapter of his personal and political journey.
Foundation Stone for 125-Foot Statue
Following the tribute ceremony, the Chief Guest will visit Eco Park, where he will perform the Bhoomi Poojan and lay the foundation stone for a proposed 125-foot statue of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
The planned monument is expected to become a prominent landmark dedicated to preserving the memory of the leader. The statue project has been conceived as a tribute to his enduring contributions to national integration, education, governance and public life.

A special exhibition dedicated to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee will also be inaugurated at Milan Mela Prangan. The exhibition has been curated to provide visitors with an in-depth understanding of his achievements through rare photographs, archival records and multimedia presentations.
The displays will chronicle his personal journey, his vision for the nation, his efforts in educational reforms and his contribution to strengthening India’s democratic framework and industrial growth.
Interactive and digital presentations have also been incorporated to make the exhibition more engaging for visitors of all age groups.
Cultural Performances to Highlight National Heritage
The commemorative programme will feature a large-scale cultural presentation celebrating India’s rich artistic traditions. The event will begin with the collective singing of Vande Mataram, symbolising unity and national pride.
A specially designed musical production titled “Sur, Sanskriti evam Rashtra” will be presented by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT). The performance will bring together 57 accomplished artists representing Indian classical, folk and traditional music from different parts of the country.
Directed by Padma Shri Tarun Bhattacharya, the musical presentation has been conceived as a tribute to Dr. Mookerjee’s ideals of cultural nationalism, national integration, education and India’s civilisational heritage.
Organisers say the programme will reflect the country’s cultural diversity while reinforcing the values that Dr. Mookerjee advocated throughout his public life.
Film Screening and Special Video Release
As part of the commemorative programme, a short documentary highlighting the life, vision and contributions of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee will be screened for the audience.
The event will also feature the release of a special video documenting the foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed 125-foot statue. The presentation is expected to capture the significance of the initiative and its role in preserving the leader’s legacy.

The Ministry of Culture has stated that the nationwide commemoration is intended to celebrate the enduring ideals of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and encourage greater public awareness of his contributions to India’s progress.
