AYODHYA: Former Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust General Secretary Champat Rai was questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The questioning marks a significant development in the high-profile case, which has already led to multiple arrests and the resignation of senior trust functionaries.
Statement Recorded for the First Time After Resignation
According to officials, Champat Rai’s statement was recorded for the first time since he stepped down from his position on June 27. Investigators reportedly questioned him for more than two hours, seeking a detailed explanation of the temple’s donation management system, including the collection, counting, storage and deposit of cash and valuables offered by devotees.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the SIT wanted to understand the complete chain of custody for donations and identify whether established procedures were followed at every stage.
Champat Rai Denies Involvement
During the questioning, Champat Rai reportedly denied having any role in the alleged theft of donations. He is said to have informed investigators that he had acted immediately after learning about suspected irregularities and that it was based on his complaint that action was initiated against those allegedly involved.
He also maintained that, as the trust’s general secretary, his responsibility was to ensure transparency and proper management of donations, and that he never supported or encouraged any irregular activity.
Probe Focuses on Donation Handling Process
The SIT reportedly questioned Rai on several operational aspects of temple administration, including:
Receipt of Donations
Investigators sought information on how cash and valuables offered by devotees were received and documented.
Counting and Verification
Officials examined the process through which donation boxes were opened and cash counted, along with the role played by trust officials, bank personnel and outsourced staff.
Safe Custody and Bank Deposits
The investigation also focused on the procedures for storing donations securely before transferring them into designated bank accounts, aiming to identify any weaknesses that may have enabled alleged misappropriation.
Case Emerged After FIR and SIT Investigation
The controversy intensified after an FIR was registered alleging theft and misappropriation of donations collected at the Ram Mandir. Following the complaint, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team to examine the allegations.
The case led to the arrest of eight individuals, many of whom were reportedly involved in counting donations or handling temple cash. Authorities have alleged that the accused exploited their access to donation collections for personal gain.
Resignations Amid Growing Scrutiny
As public attention grew, Champat Rai resigned from his post as general secretary, while trustee Anil Mishra also stepped down. The trust stated that the resignations were made to facilitate an impartial investigation and reiterated that donations made by devotees remain secure.
The trust has maintained that it is fully cooperating with investigating agencies and supports a transparent inquiry into the allegations.
Temple Receives Massive Public Donations
The Ram Mandir receives substantial donations from devotees across India and abroad. According to the trust’s latest annual report, it reported earnings of nearly ₹327 crore during the 2024–25 financial year, including approximately ₹153 crore in donations and ₹173 crore in interest income.
The temple attracts an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 visitors daily, with significantly higher footfall during weekends and major religious festivals, making robust financial management and accountability crucial.
Investigation Continues
The SIT continues to examine documentary records, CCTV footage, financial transactions and statements from trust officials, bank representatives and temple staff. Investigators are expected to determine whether any supervisory lapses contributed to the alleged theft and whether additional individuals should be questioned.
Authorities have not filed any charges against Champat Rai, and he has denied any wrongdoing. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials stating that further action will depend on the evidence collected during the probe.
