NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States in December to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, marking what could become another significant milestone in the evolving India-US strategic partnership. The indication came from US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who said Washington is looking forward to welcoming the Indian Prime Minister and reaffirmed the strength of bilateral relations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the IX US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit in Washington, Gor said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had personally extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi during his recent visit to India. He expressed optimism that the visit would further strengthen cooperation between the two democracies across key sectors including trade, security, technology and regional stability.
G20 Summit Could Provide Platform for High-Level Talks
According to Sergio Gor, Prime Minister Modi is likely to travel to the United States in December for the G20 Summit, which is scheduled to be hosted in Miami. The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for high-level discussions between Indian and American leadership on several strategic and economic issues.
The G20 summit comes at a time when global economies are navigating geopolitical tensions, supply chain challenges, energy security concerns and technological transformation. Analysts believe the meeting could help both nations deepen cooperation on shared priorities while reinforcing their commitment to a rules-based international order.
Trade Agreement Negotiations Moving Forward
The US Ambassador also voiced confidence over the ongoing negotiations for an interim India-US trade agreement. While acknowledging that trade discussions involve thousands of product categories and complex legal provisions, Gor said both sides have made considerable progress and are moving closer to finalising the deal.
He described the growing commercial relationship between India and the United States as mutually beneficial, noting that businesses from both countries continue to expand investments and partnerships. Increased trade and investment are expected to generate new opportunities for industries, strengthen supply chains and create employment in both economies.
Modi-Trump Relationship Seen as Key Strength
During the summit, USISPF Honorary Senior Advisor Al Mason highlighted the importance of the personal relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. He said the rapport between the two leaders had once been admired globally and continues to serve as a strong foundation for bilateral engagement.
According to Mason, the relationship had experienced a difficult phase due to trade issues, domestic political priorities and bureaucratic challenges. However, he credited Ambassador Sergio Gor with helping restore communication and rebuilding momentum between the two leaders.
Mason further said that President Trump respects India’s growing global influence, admires Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and remains committed to strengthening the India-US partnership in the years ahead.
Invitation to the White House Already Extended
The anticipated December visit follows an invitation extended earlier this year by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on behalf of President Donald Trump. The invitation signalled Washington’s intention to continue close engagement with New Delhi at the highest political level.
The White House invitation reflects the strategic importance both governments attach to their partnership, particularly as cooperation expands into emerging technologies, defence manufacturing, artificial intelligence, semiconductor development and clean energy initiatives.
Focus on Indo-Pacific and Security Cooperation
Apart from trade, the discussions are expected to focus on regional security and Indo-Pacific cooperation. Gor also referred to the upcoming Quad engagements, saying the four-member grouping remains committed to enhancing maritime security and ensuring a stable Indo-Pacific region.
India and the United States have steadily expanded defence cooperation through joint military exercises, technology transfers and strategic dialogues. Both countries also work closely through platforms such as the Quad alongside Japan and Australia to address regional security challenges and promote a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
Trump’s India Visit Likely Next Year
When asked about the possibility of President Donald Trump visiting India, Sergio Gor indicated that such a visit is unlikely during the US midterm election period. However, he suggested that a presidential visit could take place sometime next year, adding that both governments would like to make it happen at the earliest feasible opportunity.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
If Prime Minister Modi’s December visit materialises, it will represent another important chapter in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The visit is expected to reinforce political trust, accelerate economic cooperation and deepen collaboration in defence, technology, innovation and regional security.
