KOLKATA: Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal witnessed intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds, bringing much-needed relief from humid weather but also causing widespread disruption. Trees were uprooted, roads were partially blocked and traffic movement was affected in several parts of the city as the weather system intensified over the region. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.
Sudden Weather Change Brings Relief and Disruption
After days of oppressive heat and high humidity, Kolkata experienced a dramatic shift in weather as dark clouds gathered over the city, followed by heavy rain and strong winds. The sudden downpour significantly reduced temperatures, offering relief to residents struggling with uncomfortable conditions. However, the accompanying stormy winds also led to disruptions across multiple neighbourhoods.
Several roads witnessed water accumulation, making commuting difficult during peak hours. Motorists were forced to slow down due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions, while pedestrians faced inconvenience navigating flooded stretches.
Trees Uprooted Across Several Areas
The strong winds uprooted trees in different parts of Kolkata and surrounding districts. Falling branches and uprooted trees blocked roads and temporarily disrupted traffic movement in some localities. Emergency response teams and civic workers were deployed to clear debris and restore normal movement.
Visuals circulating on social media showed damaged vehicles and roads obstructed by fallen trees, highlighting the intensity of the weather event. Similar incidents have occurred in the past whenever strong thunderstorms struck the city during the monsoon transition period.
Thunderstorm Alert Issued Across South Bengal
Meteorological authorities have forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across all districts of South Bengal. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour in several places, with isolated areas potentially experiencing stronger gusts.
Districts including Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan and West Burdwan are expected to witness intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity over the coming days. Authorities have urged residents to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay indoors whenever possible.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for North Bengal
While South Bengal is expected to receive moderate rainfall and thunderstorms, North Bengal could witness significantly heavier precipitation. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts such as Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The hilly regions face an increased risk of landslides due to continuous rainfall. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and transport disruptions are also possible if heavy showers persist. Authorities are monitoring vulnerable zones and advising tourists and residents to remain updated on weather alerts.
Monsoon Activity Strengthening Over Eastern India
The current weather pattern is linked to strengthening monsoon conditions over eastern India. Active moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal has enhanced rainfall activity across West Bengal and neighbouring states. Similar rainfall events have also been forecast in several other states across the country.
Meteorologists indicate that fluctuating weather conditions may continue throughout the week, with periods of sunshine interrupted by sudden showers and thunderstorms. Residents should therefore prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Authorities Advise Caution
Officials have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during intense thunderstorms and to remain alert to official weather updates. Electrical hazards, falling trees and waterlogged roads remain major concerns during such events.
People living in low-lying areas have been asked to take precautionary measures, while commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays caused by adverse weather conditions.
The rainfall has undoubtedly brought relief from scorching temperatures, but the accompanying storms have once again highlighted Kolkata’s vulnerability to sudden weather disturbances during the active monsoon season. With more rain expected over both South and North Bengal, authorities and citizens alike are preparing for continued wet conditions in the coming days.
