BAYAHIBE: A devastating fire tore through a popular beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic, killing one woman and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists and staff members, authorities said on Friday. The incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel, one of the country’s well-known tourist destinations.

Italian Tourist Loses Her Life

Authorities identified the victim as 46-year-old Italian national Francesca Valentino, who died during the blaze. Emergency responders also confirmed that three people were taken to nearby medical facilities, while six others received treatment at the scene. Those affected included hotel guests, visitors and emergency personnel involved in rescue operations.

Fire Spread Rapidly Across Resort Buildings

Videos shared on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the Caribbean coastline as flames engulfed sections of the resort’s palm-thatched roofs. According to the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE), the fire intensified quickly due to the highly flammable palm roofing materials combined with strong wind conditions.

Thousands Evacuated To Safety

Around 1,700 people were safely evacuated from the property and relocated to nearby hotels and accommodation facilities as firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. Emergency officials later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Officials said preliminary assessments suggest the construction materials used in parts of the resort may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, but no definitive cause has been established yet.

Nearby Resort Unaffected

Officials stated that the neighbouring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which belongs to the same hotel group, was not damaged and continues to operate normally. Authorities also reassured tourists that travel activities across Bayahibe and surrounding areas remain unaffected.

A Key Tourism Destination

The Dominican Republic remains the Caribbean’s leading tourist destination, attracting around 5.6 million visitors during the first five months of 2026. Bayahibe, famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches, is particularly popular among international tourists.
