CHAMBA: A devastating road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district claimed the lives of seven people after an SUV carrying family members plunged into a deep gorge during the early hours of Thursday. The tragedy has once again raised concerns over road safety challenges in the Himalayan state’s remote and mountainous terrain.
According to police officials, the accident occurred on the Chamba-Masroond road near Chhatrund in the Churah subdivision of Chamba district. The victims were returning to their native village after attending a religious function and community feast in a nearby village when the vehicle suddenly lost control and veered off the narrow mountain road before tumbling hundreds of metres down a steep gorge.
Authorities said all seven occupants suffered fatal injuries. Six people died instantly at the scene, while another person succumbed during rescue operations. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely crushed, making rescue efforts extremely difficult.
The deceased included six members of the same family and the driver. Preliminary reports identified the victims as residents of Mahal village in Chamba district, while the driver belonged to a nearby village. Among those killed were elderly family members, middle-aged relatives and a young woman in her twenties.
Police officials said local residents alerted authorities after noticing signs of the accident. Rescue teams, police personnel and villagers immediately rushed to the spot. However, reaching the wreckage proved challenging because the vehicle had fallen nearly 500 metres into a difficult and inaccessible area.
Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani said an initial investigation suggests the driver may have lost control of the vehicle. Officials are examining whether fatigue, drowsiness or an attempt to avoid an animal crossing the road could have contributed to the accident. Investigators have reportedly found no immediate evidence of a collision with another vehicle.
Rescue workers had to navigate steep slopes and dangerous terrain to retrieve the bodies. The operation continued for several hours before all victims were recovered and transported to Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College and Hospital in Chamba for post-mortem examinations.
