NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday completed a clean sweep in the Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh, with all three of its candidates being elected unopposed after the nomination of Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan was rejected during scrutiny. The development handed the ruling party all three seats from the state and triggered a fresh political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress.
The BJP candidates declared elected to the Upper House were Tarun Chugh, Rajneesh Agrawal and Mahesh Kevat. With no opposition candidate remaining in the fray, the Returning Officer formally declared all three winners.
The outcome followed the rejection of Congress nominee Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination papers earlier this week. Election authorities acted after objections were raised regarding the disclosure of details related to a pending case in Telangana. Officials maintained that the required information was not furnished despite an opportunity being provided during scrutiny.
Congress strongly opposed the decision and described it as unfair. The party approached the Election Commission and later moved the Supreme Court, challenging the rejection of Natarajan’s nomination. Congress leaders argued that the Returning Officer’s decision was flawed and sought intervention to restore her candidature.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Natarajan’s plea. However, the court declined to halt the ongoing Rajya Sabha election process, allowing the declaration of results to proceed. The legal challenge is expected to continue even after the conclusion of the election process.
The Congress accused election authorities of acting with bias and questioned why similar flexibility shown in other cases was not extended to its candidate. Senior party leaders alleged that democratic norms had been compromised and demanded a review of the decision.
For the BJP, the result marked a significant political victory in Madhya Pradesh. The party had surprised many observers by fielding a third candidate despite the state’s electoral arithmetic appearing to favour a contest. With the Congress candidate eliminated from the race, the BJP converted a potentially competitive election into an uncontested victory.
Among the winners, Mahesh Kevat’s election drew particular attention. Speaking after the result, he said his elevation reflected the BJP’s emphasis on grassroots workers and noted that a party worker from Bundelkhand could rise to become a Member of Parliament.
Political analysts view the Madhya Pradesh outcome as another sign of the BJP’s growing strength in Parliament. The party has continued to expand its footprint in the Rajya Sabha through victories in state legislatures, helping consolidate its influence in the Upper House.
While the BJP celebrates a 3-0 victory in Madhya Pradesh, the controversy surrounding the rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination is likely to remain a subject of legal and political debate in the coming days. The Supreme Court’s hearing on the matter could determine whether any further questions arise over the conduct of the election process, even though the results have already been declared. :::
