NEW DELHI: Three Indian seafarers who had been reported missing after a deadly attack on the oil tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman have now been confirmed dead, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday. The development has deepened concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the strategically important Gulf region.

The Palau-flagged tanker was carrying 24 Indian crew members when it came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week. Following the incident, 21 Indian sailors were rescued, while three crew members were initially listed as missing. Search and recovery efforts continued for several hours before authorities confirmed the deaths of the missing seafarers.

Expressing grief over the tragedy, Sarbananda Sonowal described the loss of lives as “deeply unfortunate.” In a statement, the minister said the government was closely monitoring the situation and extending all possible assistance to the affected families. He also conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased sailors and paid tribute to their service in the maritime sector.

According to official reports, the vessel was struck while transiting waters off Oman, a region that has witnessed heightened tensions amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. The attack triggered an emergency response operation involving regional authorities and maritime agencies.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs had earlier condemned the attack and confirmed that the Indian Embassy in Oman was coordinating with local authorities regarding rescue and search operations. The government also raised the issue through diplomatic channels, stressing the need to ensure the safety and security of civilian seafarers operating in international waters.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about maritime security in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy transit routes. Shipping industry observers have warned that escalating regional hostilities could increase risks for commercial vessels and their crews.

The identities of the deceased sailors have not yet been officially released in full, pending notification of their families. Government agencies are working with shipping authorities and diplomatic missions to facilitate the repatriation process and provide necessary support to the bereaved families.

As investigations into the attack continue, India has reiterated its position that the lives of civilian seafarers must be protected and that commercial shipping routes should remain safe from military hostilities. The tragedy marks one of the most serious incidents involving Indian maritime personnel in the region in recent years.
