Air India Flight Encounters Severe Mid-Air Turbulence

An Air India flight operating between Phuket, Thailand, and New Delhi experienced a frightening episode of severe turbulence on Tuesday, leaving multiple passengers and cabin crew with minor injuries. Despite the unexpected incident, the aircraft landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, where medical teams were already on standby to assist those affected.

The airline confirmed that the turbulence occurred while the aircraft was cruising, resulting in a brief but significant change in altitude. Reports indicated that the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet in altitude before the pilots regained stable flight conditions.

Passengers and Crew Receive Medical Attention

According to Air India, around a dozen people, including passengers and crew members, sustained minor injuries during the turbulence. Most of the injuries were caused when individuals who were not securely seated or moving inside the cabin were thrown off balance by the sudden movement of the aircraft.

Emergency medical personnel met the flight immediately after its arrival in Delhi. Those requiring further examination were transported to nearby hospitals, while others received first aid at the airport. Airline officials stated that all passengers and crew safely disembarked after landing.

Air India Issues Official Statement

In an official statement, Air India acknowledged the turbulence-related incident and reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority. The airline said the aircraft experienced a temporary altitude change because of turbulence during the cruise phase of the journey.

The airline also thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation during the incident and assured that all necessary assistance, including medical support, was provided immediately after landing.

Moment of Panic Inside the Cabin

Passengers described tense moments inside the aircraft as the sudden drop caught many by surprise. Several travellers reportedly experienced intense jolts, with loose items being thrown around the cabin. Some passengers said the turbulence lasted only a few minutes, but the sudden altitude loss created panic among those on board.

Videos circulating on social media showed visible signs of disruption inside the cabin, including damaged ceiling panels and passengers receiving medical assistance after landing. Authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of every video shared online, but visuals highlighted the severity of the turbulence experienced during the flight.

Despite the turbulence, the flight crew maintained control of the aircraft and completed the journey safely. Aviation experts note that pilots are trained extensively to manage turbulence and sudden altitude variations while ensuring passenger safety.

The aircraft landed normally in Delhi without requiring an emergency landing. Ground teams immediately coordinated passenger assistance, medical care, and post-flight inspections.

Air India is expected to conduct a standard safety review of the incident. Aviation authorities may also examine weather conditions, flight data, and cockpit records to determine the precise circumstances that led to the sudden altitude change.

Such investigations help airlines improve operational procedures and ensure continued compliance with aviation safety standards.

Understanding Turbulence Risks

Aviation experts explain that turbulence is a common phenomenon caused by changes in atmospheric conditions. While most turbulence is mild, stronger episodes can occur unexpectedly, especially due to clear-air turbulence, which is often invisible to radar.

Experts consistently advise passengers to keep their seat belts fastened whenever they are seated, even if the seat belt sign is switched off, as unexpected turbulence can develop without warning. This simple precaution significantly reduces the risk of injuries during sudden aircraft movements.

Safety Remains the Priority

Although the incident caused understandable concern among passengers, aviation specialists emphasized that commercial aircraft are engineered to withstand severe turbulence. Flight crews also undergo rigorous simulator training to respond effectively to such situations.

Air India has assured passengers that it will continue extending support to everyone affected while completing the necessary safety assessments following the incident. The safe landing of the aircraft and the prompt medical response ensured that the injuries remained minor, bringing the frightening mid-air episode to a safe conclusion.
