One year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line and Sairang Railway Station on September 13, 2025, the landmark rail project has emerged as a major catalyst for development in Mizoram. What was once a long-awaited railway connection has rapidly evolved into a gateway for passenger mobility, freight transportation, tourism, education, trade and new economic opportunities.
A Historic Railway Milestone for Mizoram
For generations, Mizoram’s challenging mountainous terrain meant that people largely depended on roads for long-distance travel. Difficult terrain, lengthy journeys and limited transportation options often made movement of people and goods expensive and time-consuming.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line has significantly changed this situation by bringing the national railway network closer to Aizawl, the state capital. The project is a major feat of engineering, passing through steep hills, deep valleys and difficult geological formations.
The 51.38-km corridor includes 153 bridges, comprising 55 major bridges, 88 minor bridges and 10 Road Over Bridges and Road Under Bridges. Six bridges are more than 70 metres high, while the tallest rises to 114 metres—around 42 metres higher than the Qutub Minar in Delhi.
The alignment also features 45 tunnels extending for nearly 16 kilometres. From Bairabi, the railway passes through the newly developed stations of Hortoki, Kawnpui and Mualkhang before reaching Sairang, bringing rail connectivity close to Aizawl.
15 Lakh Passengers, More Than 1,100 Train Trips
The strongest indication of the railway’s impact has come from passenger demand. During its first year, the train services operating from Sairang completed more than 1,100 trips and served over 15 lakh passengers.
Passenger occupancy has remained exceptionally high, with trains operating above 100% capacity on every trip. The tri-weekly Sairang-Kolkata service has recorded average occupancy of more than 140%, while the daily Sairang-Guwahati service has consistently remained above 110%.
The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has achieved average occupancy of more than 145%, highlighting the strong demand for direct connectivity between Mizoram and the national capital.
Together, these passenger services have generated approximately ₹54 crore in ticket revenue for Indian Railways.
The Sairang-Silchar passenger service, inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2026, has further strengthened the rail connection between Mizoram and Assam’s Barak Valley.
Sairang Station Becomes a New Transport Hub
Sairang Railway Station has also witnessed substantial passenger movement since becoming operational. In its first year, the station handled more than 5.54 lakh passenger movements, with an average of around 3,300 passengers visiting the station every day.
The station is gradually becoming more than a transit point. Local communities have undertaken tree plantation and other environmental initiatives around the station premises, reflecting growing community engagement with the new infrastructure.
Freight Railway Opens New Economic Possibilities
The transformation has not been limited to passenger transportation. The railway has created a more efficient channel for transporting essential commodities, construction materials and automobiles to Mizoram.
The first cargo train reached Sairang on September 14, 2025, just one day after the railway line was inaugurated. It transported more than 26,000 bags of cement from the STAR Cement siding at Tetelia near Guwahati.
The arrival of cement by rail demonstrated the potential of railway freight to reduce logistics expenses and improve the availability and affordability of essential construction materials in Aizawl.
Automobile transportation has also benefited from the new connection. In December 2025, the first automobile consignment arrived at Sairang, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati.
Over the past year, more than 2,500 wagons of railway freight have been delivered at Sairang. Approximately 70% of this cargo comprised construction materials such as cement, stone and sand, supporting housing and infrastructure development across Mizoram.
Other consignments have included rice, fertilizers and automobiles. As many as 156 wagons carrying automobiles have reached Sairang, creating a higher-capacity alternative to road-based transportation.
Railway Connectivity Expands Access to Mizoram
The availability of direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Silchar has made Mizoram more accessible to travellers from across the country.
Rail connectivity provides an additional travel option for visitors who previously depended heavily on air travel or lengthy road journeys. The improved connection can also support hotels, homestays, restaurants, taxis, tourist guides, cultural enterprises and local markets by making movement into and out of the state more convenient.

Better rail access is also strengthening Mizoram’s ability to host educational, sporting, cultural and official events involving participants from other parts of the country.
For students, the new connectivity offers a more practical travel option for reaching universities, professional institutions, coaching centres, examinations and academic programmes outside Mizoram.
Local Products Find a Route to National Markets
The railway is opening opportunities for Mizoram’s local enterprises as well. The state’s handloom, bamboo, cane and traditional craft products can potentially reach markets outside the region more efficiently.
Anthurium flowers provided an early example of this potential. The first parcel consignment from Sairang was booked on September 19, 2025, and transported to Delhi through the parcel van of the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express.
The movement represented an important shift: locally produced, high-value goods could begin their journey towards national consumers directly from Mizoram.
One Year of Rail, A New Era of Opportunity
A year after its inauguration, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has moved beyond being an infrastructure project to becoming an important economic and social link for Mizoram.
With more than 15 lakh passengers, over 1,100 train trips and more than 2,500 freight wagons delivered to Sairang, the railway has demonstrated its growing importance across multiple sectors.
It has brought major cities closer to Mizoram, created new routes for students and travellers, strengthened freight movement, reduced logistical challenges and opened fresh possibilities for local producers.
The significance of the Bairabi-Sairang line therefore extends far beyond the tracks and stations. By connecting Mizoram more closely with the national railway network, it is helping turn distance into access, connectivity into opportunity and infrastructure into a foundation for long-term development.
