KOLKATA: In a dramatic turn of events that has intensified political and social tensions across Baruipur, West Bengal, the primary suspect in the brutal gang-rape and murder of a minor girl was shot dead in a police encounter early Wednesday morning.
The suspect, identified as Prabhas Mondal, was killed after he allegedly attempted to escape custody by snatching a service weapon and opening fire on police officers during a routine crime scene reconstruction exercise. The incident has triggered a fierce political debate over law enforcement methods in the state, drawing immediate parallels from opposition leaders to heavy-handed policing styles seen elsewhere in the country.
The Midnight Encounter and Escape Attempt
According to senior officials of the Baruipur Police District, the incident occurred at around 12:45 AM on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. A heavily armed team from the Baruipur Police Station escorted Mondal to the Surjyapur Haat area—the exact location where the young victim’s body was recovered days prior. The objective of the late-night operation was to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the murder, a standard investigative procedure aimed at resolving contradictions in the suspect’s initial testimonies.
As investigators prepared to begin the process, Mondal reportedly lunged at a police officer, successfully wresting away his service firearm. Authorities claim the suspect fired at least one round directly at the police party before attempting to break the security perimeter and flee into the darkness.
In response, the police team opened fire in self-defense. Mondal sustained severe bullet wounds during the brief shootout and collapsed at the scene. He was rushed immediately to the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where attending medical staff declared him dead on arrival. No police personnel were seriously injured by the suspect’s gunfire, though the encounter has left the local administrative infrastructure on high alert.
The Heinous Crime That Triggered Nationwide Outrage
The encounter is the latest flashpoint in a harrowing case that has kept South 24 Parganas district on edge since the weekend. The crisis began on Saturday, July 4, when a 11-to-12-year-old girl went missing from her neighborhood. Following a frantic search by family members and locals, her body was discovered on Sunday morning, stuffed inside a gunny sack and dumped in a local pond.
A preliminary autopsy report subsequently confirmed the worst fears of the community, revealing extensive physical trauma that pointed to a violent gang-rape. Shockingly, the forensic examination also indicated that the girl had water in her lungs, meaning she was still alive when she was forced into the sack and thrown into the pond to drown.

Investigating teams secured a vital breakthrough after retrieving local CCTV footage. The digital evidence captured Mondal luring the young girl away shortly before she vanished. Investigators later revealed that Mondal had allegedly been promised a sum of ₹10,000 by the prime accused, Ananda Sardar, to assist in orchestrating the abduction and assault.
Public Anger, Vandalism, and a Tragic Lynching
The discovery of the minor’s body on Sunday unleashed a wave of uncontained public fury in Baruipur. Enraged residents blocked major thoroughfares, including the vital Baruipur-Joynagar Road, and disrupted train services along the Sealdah-Namkhana railway line by setting tyres ablaze and placing obstructions on the tracks. Police vehicles were targeted, wind-shields smashed, and multiple public properties vandalized as protesters demanded immediate justice and capital punishment for the perpetrators.
In a deeply tragic manifestation of mob justice, an angry crowd turned on a local resident, identified as Indrajit Mondal (also reported as Indrajit Tanti), suspecting him of being an accomplice in the minor’s murder. The mob severely assaulted the 26-year-old man, who later succumbed to his injuries.
The police department later issued a statement confirming that a comprehensive background check proved Indrajit was completely innocent and had no connection to the assault or murder of the girl. Following this wrongful lynching, authorities registered separate murder cases against the rioters, using video footage to identify approximately 200 individuals involved in the vigilantism and destruction of public infrastructure.
Political Matrix and Administrative Backlash
The escalation of violence brought top-tier political attention to Baruipur. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the area to personally review the state of the investigation and meet with the grieving families of both the young girl and the wrongfully lynched man. Adhikari issued a strict directive to Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta, demanding a thorough administrative report within 72 hours and promising absolute accountability.
“If there is even one percent negligence on the part of law enforcement regarding the delay in filing the initial missing person report, strict disciplinary action will follow,” Adhikari stated to the media, while also reassuring the public that the state would push for the death penalty for all surviving suspects.
However, the news of the encounter death quickly shifted the political discourse. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra openly condemned the incident on social media, describing it as an breakdown of constitutional process. Moitra characterized the encounter as “jungle law,” warning that the state was treading a dangerous path reminiscent of extrajudicial trends observed in neighboring northern states. A total of four primary suspects have been accounted for in connection with the rape and murder case.
