KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Wednesday finalised the distribution of portfolios among ministers in the Suvendu Adhikari-led cabinet, bringing clarity to the responsibilities of key members of the newly expanded administration. The allocation was approved after multiple rounds of consultations between Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP leadership and the party’s central leadership.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has retained several crucial departments, including Home Affairs, Law and Justice, Land and Land Reforms, Power, Information and Culture, Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation, Personnel and Administrative Reforms, and Hill Affairs. The decision underlines the government’s intention to keep major administrative and security-related portfolios directly under the chief minister’s supervision.
One of the most significant developments in the portfolio allocation is the appointment of senior BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta as the state’s Finance Minister. Earlier speculation suggested that the finance department might remain with the chief minister, while Dasgupta could be assigned higher education. However, the final decision placed him in charge of the crucial finance portfolio.
Healthcare responsibilities have been entrusted to Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee, who has been appointed Health Minister. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Adhikari during a public event in New Town, where he highlighted the importance of strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.
Veteran politician and Maniktala MLA Tapas Roy has been given charge of the Industry and Commerce Department. In addition to industry, he will also oversee the Non-Conventional Energy Department, reflecting the government’s focus on industrial growth and alternative energy development.
The education sector has also seen notable assignments. Jagannath Chattopadhyay has been appointed Minister for Higher Education, while senior BJP leader Deepak Barman will head the School Education Department. The final allocation differs from earlier reports that suggested a different division of educational portfolios.
The cabinet expansion earlier this month saw the induction of several new ministers, with the BJP leadership emphasising a mix of experienced political figures, organisational leaders and regional representation. The latest portfolio distribution is expected to shape the policy direction of the government over the coming years.
Political observers view the allocation as an attempt to balance governance, administrative efficiency and regional representation. By retaining strategic departments while assigning key economic, health, education and industrial portfolios to senior ministers, the Adhikari government has sought to establish a clear administrative framework for its tenure.
With the ministry distribution now officially completed, attention is expected to shift toward policy implementation and the government’s priorities in areas such as economic growth, healthcare, education reform and infrastructure development.
