The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fresh offensive against the West Bengal government over allegations linked to the state’s liquor policy, drawing parallels with controversies that have surfaced in other parts of the country. The party has accused the previous Mamata Banerjee-led administration of facilitating irregularities in the liquor trade and has vowed that those responsible will face legal consequences.

The political confrontation follows reports and investigations that have raised questions about changes made to West Bengal’s excise and liquor policies. According to allegations highlighted by opposition leaders, modifications introduced in the state’s liquor distribution and licensing framework allegedly benefited select private entities, resulting in significant losses to the public exchequer. The accusations have reignited a debate over transparency and governance in the management of the liquor sector.

The BJP has claimed that the issue is not merely administrative but reflects a larger pattern of alleged corruption that marked the tenure of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Party leaders argued that the controversy deserves a thorough investigation to determine whether public resources were misused and whether undue advantages were extended to particular business groups.

Senior BJP leader and the party’s Information Technology Department head, Amit Malviya, strongly criticized the former state administration over the matter. In his remarks, Malviya alleged that the liquor policy was altered in a manner that favored a select group of beneficiaries. He asserted that after similar controversies elsewhere in the country, attention was now turning to West Bengal and that all individuals responsible for any wrongdoing would be brought to justice through due process.

Amit Malviya further claimed that the alleged liquor scam represented another example of systemic corruption under the previous regime. He stated that accountability would be ensured and that investigations should proceed without political interference. According to him, the people of West Bengal deserve complete transparency regarding decisions that affected state revenues and public interests.

The BJP has repeatedly accused the TMC of presiding over multiple corruption scandals during its years in power. Party leaders have cited issues ranging from recruitment controversies to other financial irregularities, arguing that these cases indicate deeper governance failures. Opposition figures maintain that public confidence can only be restored through impartial inquiries and strict action against those found guilty.

Supporters of the former TMC government, however, have consistently rejected corruption allegations made by the BJP, describing them as politically motivated attacks aimed at damaging the party’s image. The TMC party leaders have often argued that BJP’s accusations are intended to gain political mileage and influence public opinion ahead of major political developments.

The liquor policy controversy has emerged as another flashpoint in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the TMC. Political observers note that allegations surrounding excise policies have become highly contentious across several states, often triggering demands for investigations and accountability from rival parties.

With the BJP now governing West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, party leaders have indicated that scrutiny of decisions taken under the previous administration is likely to intensify. The party maintains that any evidence of wrongdoing will be pursued through appropriate legal and investigative mechanisms.

As the debate continues, attention is expected to focus on whether official agencies initiate further inquiries into the allegations and what findings may emerge from any future investigations. For now, the issue has added another chapter to the fierce political contest between the BJP and the TMC, with both sides standing firmly by their respective positions.

The controversy is likely to remain in the spotlight as demands for accountability, transparency and detailed examination of policy decisions continue to shape political discourse in West Bengal.
