The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days of wages for eligible railway employees, bringing festive-season relief to approximately 11.41 lakh non-gazetted railway staff across India. The total financial outlay for the bonus stands at ₹2,009.61 crore, recognising the contribution of railway personnel to the Indian Railways’ strong operational performance during the financial year 2025-26.
The decision acknowledges the dedication and hard work of railway employees who help maintain the country’s vast railway network, facilitate passenger movement and support freight transportation. The annual bonus is also intended to encourage employees to sustain and improve railway operations.
₹17,951 Maximum Bonus for Eligible Railway Employees
Under the approved scheme of the cabinet, eligible railway employees will receive a bonus equivalent to 78 days of wages. The maximum amount payable to an individual eligible employee has been fixed at ₹17,951.
The payment will cover approximately 11.40 lakh non-gazetted employees belonging to various categories of the railway workforce. These employees perform essential duties across railway stations, tracks, trains, maintenance facilities and administrative offices.
The beneficiaries include track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers, commonly known as guards, station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff and other Group C employees.
Their responsibilities range from operating trains and maintaining railway infrastructure to managing station operations, ensuring technical reliability and supporting the daily functioning of the national transporter.
The bonus is designed to recognise the contribution of these employees to the railway system while providing additional financial support ahead of the festive period.
Annual Railway Bonus Ahead of Durga Puja and Dussehra
The Productivity Linked Bonus has traditionally been paid to eligible railway employees before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays. Continuing this practice, the government has approved the 78-day bonus for the current year.
The payment is an important annual benefit for railway workers and their families, particularly as household spending often increases during the festive season. The additional amount can help employees manage expenses related to celebrations, travel, shopping and other family requirements.
Beyond its financial value, the bonus serves as an incentive linked to the performance of the railway workforce. By recognising employees’ efforts, the government aims to encourage greater commitment, operational efficiency and improved service delivery.
The scheme covers eligible non-gazetted employees across different railway departments, reflecting the collective role of frontline and supporting staff in keeping railway services operational.
Indian Railways Records 1,670 Million Tonnes of Freight
The cabinet’s decision comes against the backdrop of a strong performance by Indian Railways during the financial year 2025-26.

According to the information released with the Cabinet decision, the national transporter handled a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight during the year. The achievement highlights the scale of railway operations in supporting India’s logistics network, industrial activity and movement of essential commodities.
Freight transportation is a major component of the railway system, connecting manufacturing centres, mines, agricultural markets, ports and consumption hubs. Efficient cargo movement also supports supply chains and helps businesses transport goods across long distances.
The record freight figure underscores the contribution of railway personnel who manage train operations, maintain tracks and equipment, coordinate loading activities and ensure the movement of cargo across the network.
The government’s announcement links the bonus decision to the railway workforce’s contribution to these operational achievements.
Railways Carries Nearly 7.41 Billion Passengers
Indian Railways also carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers during 2025-26, reflecting its continuing importance as a major mode of transportation in the country.
Millions of people depend on the railway network for daily commuting, long-distance journeys, education, employment, business and family travel. Managing such a large volume of passengers requires coordination among train crews, station personnel, maintenance teams, safety staff and administrative departments.
Loco pilots and train managers play a central role in train operations, while station masters and pointsmen help manage station movements. Track maintainers and technicians contribute to infrastructure upkeep, and other employees support passenger services and operational administration.
