Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a sharp political offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the Opposition’s protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, predicting that the Congress will suffer its fourth consecutive defeat in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
On October 13, Shah accused the Congress of blaming the voter-list revision exercise for its electoral setbacks instead of examining the reasons behind its declining electoral performance. He asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued to enjoy public support.
The Home Minister’s remarks came amid escalating political tensions over the SIR process and Opposition allegations concerning voter-list deletions and the functioning of the Election Commission of India. His comments also followed protests by INDIA bloc leaders in New Delhi, who have demanded accountability over the revision of electoral rolls.
Amit Shah Challenges Rahul Gandhi Over SIR Allegations
Questioning Gandhi’s criticism of the voter-list revision exercise, Shah asked whether the Congress leader believed the BJP’s electoral victories could be attributed to SIR. He pointed out that the exercise began after the 2024 general elections and argued that the Congress needed to confront the political reasons behind its repeated defeats.
Shah maintained that the Opposition could not undermine the BJP’s electoral performance simply by questioning the revision process. He also accused Gandhi of attempting to build political momentum through public allegations and media events rather than working consistently to regain voters’ confidence.
According to the Home Minister, the Congress leadership must assess its electoral strategy, reconnect with citizens and understand why voters have repeatedly chosen the BJP and its allies.
Shah’s remarks reflect the BJP’s broader strategy of countering the Opposition’s election-related allegations by emphasising the ruling alliance’s electoral record and public support.
SIR Controversy Intensifies Political Confrontation
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has emerged as a major point of confrontation between the BJP and Opposition parties. The exercise is intended to update voter lists, but Opposition leaders have questioned its implementation and raised concerns about the removal of eligible voters’ names.

Congress and other INDIA bloc parties have alleged that the revision could disproportionately affect vulnerable communities and undermine the fairness of elections. They have called for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations that the exercise is designed to favour the ruling party. The poll panel has maintained that voters whose names have been incorrectly removed can seek re-enrolment through the prescribed procedures.
The dispute has increasingly moved beyond administrative questions about electoral rolls, becoming a broader political debate over democratic accountability, voting rights and public confidence in electoral institutions.
Opposition Protests Put Election Commission Under Pressure
The controversy has fuelled demonstrations in Delhi, with Opposition leaders targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanding accountability over the SIR process.
On October 12, INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, participated in a protest march towards the Supreme Court. The march was stopped before reaching the court, after which Opposition representatives submitted a petition raising their concerns about the Election Commission and alleged electoral irregularities.

The protests have also drawn attention to the treatment of demonstrators and restrictions imposed on gatherings in the national capital. Separate demonstrations involving student groups and members of the Cockroach Janta Party have resulted in detentions, intensifying the political atmosphere surrounding the controversy.
The Opposition has presented the demonstrations as an effort to defend voting rights and constitutional principles. The BJP, however, has accused its political rivals of using the issue to attack institutions and divert attention from their electoral shortcomings.
Shah Expresses Confidence in BJP and NDA’s 2029 Prospects
Shah’s prediction of another Congress defeat was accompanied by a strong expression of confidence in the BJP-led NDA’s prospects for the next general election.
He argued that voters continued to support Modi’s leadership and rejected the suggestion that the BJP’s electoral performance could be explained primarily through changes to voter lists.
The Home Minister also urged Gandhi to reflect on the Congress’s performance across different states, arguing that repeated electoral losses required a serious review of the party’s political approach.
For the BJP, the 2029 Lok Sabha election represents an opportunity to seek another national mandate under Modi. For the Congress and its allies, the challenge will be to consolidate Opposition unity, strengthen their organisation and persuade voters that they offer a credible alternative.
However, the next general election remains nearly three years away, and its outcome cannot be determined by predictions made by political leaders. Electoral results will depend on voter sentiment, alliances, campaign strategies, governance and the political circumstances prevailing at the time.
Electoral Battle Over SIR Likely to Continue
Shah’s attack on Gandhi underscores how the SIR controversy has become intertwined with the wider contest between the BJP and the INDIA bloc.
While the ruling party has defended the revision process and emphasised its electoral mandate, the Opposition continues to demand answers about voter-list changes and safeguards against the exclusion of eligible citizens.
The debate is likely to remain politically significant as parties prepare for upcoming state elections and begin shaping their strategies for 2029.
Ultimately, the controversy will require both transparent electoral procedures and public confidence in the institutions responsible for conducting elections. Whether the Congress can overcome its electoral challenges, and whether the NDA can secure another decisive mandate, will be settled by voters at the ballot box.
For now, Shah’s prediction has added another sharp exchange to the growing confrontation between the government and the Opposition over electoral integrity and the future direction of Indian politics.
