In a dramatic development ahead of a planned political demonstration in the national capital, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police shortly after their flight landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday. The reported action came amid heightened security arrangements and preventive measures intended to stop the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar.

The incident drew attention after videos shared on the party’s social media account appeared to show police personnel entering the aircraft before passengers had disembarked. The footage captured a tense exchange between Dipke and the officers as they approached the leaders’ seats.

Police Enter Aircraft Moments After Landing

According to the report published by Hindustan Times, the three CJP leaders had travelled to Delhi to participate in a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The proposed protest was intended to raise allegations concerning electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

A video shared by the party showed Dipke speaking as police officers entered the aircraft. He questioned why the officers had approached the leaders inside the plane rather than waiting for them to disembark.

Dipke was heard saying that he had come to Delhi prepared to face detention. The footage also showed the leaders raising slogans, including “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inquilab Zindabad”, as the officers moved towards them.

During the exchange, police personnel asked the leaders to cooperate. The video reportedly captured an officer clarifying that they were not arresting the leaders. Dipke also requested permission to collect his bag.

The footage quickly brought the incident into public view, placing the airport detention at the centre of the controversy surrounding the planned CJP demonstration.

CJP Condemns Detention of Its Leaders

The Cockroach Janta Party strongly criticised the reported police action, alleging that its leaders were intercepted to prevent them from reaching the protest venue.

The party demanded the immediate release of Dipke, Das and Ranka, arguing that the action undermined their ability to participate in the planned demonstration.

The CJP characterised the incident as an attempt to suppress its political activities. However, these claims represent the party’s position, and the specific grounds for the reported detention require clarification from the authorities.

According to the Hindustan Times report, a senior Delhi Police official confirmed that teams from the force’s southwest district had been deployed at the airport.

Why Was the CJP Planning a Protest at Jantar Mantar?

The planned demonstration targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The CJP intended to demand his resignation over allegations concerning electoral roll management, including issues related to the Special Intensive Revision process and Form 6, which is used to apply for inclusion in the electoral roll.

The allegations formed the political backdrop to the proposed gathering. Electoral roll revision is a sensitive issue because it affects the process of registering eligible voters and maintaining accurate voter lists.

Jantar Mantar is one of New Delhi’s prominent venues for public demonstrations. However, authorities had reportedly denied permission for the proposed gathering, citing law-and-order concerns.

With the protest approaching, security personnel were deployed at sensitive locations to prevent an unauthorised assembly and manage the possibility of public disruption.

More Detentions Reported Amid Security Measures

The airport incident came amid reports of a wider preventive operation targeting individuals associated with or travelling to participate in the CJP-led demonstration.

Other reports on Saturday indicated that YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and content creator Kavya Karnatac had also been detained in separate incidents. The CJP’s legal affairs head, Ratna Singh, was likewise reported to have been detained earlier in the day.

These reported detentions intensified the controversy surrounding the proposed gathering and raised questions about the scope of the preventive measures.

Authorities have cited law-and-order concerns in connection with restrictions on the demonstration, while the CJP has challenged the manner in which its leaders were stopped.

Political Fallout and Questions Over Civil Liberties

The detention of Dipke, Das and Ranka before they could reach Jantar Mantar became a significant development in the dispute over the planned protest. The reported entry of police personnel into the aircraft before passengers disembarked made the incident particularly striking.

For the CJP, the immediate demand is the release of its detained leaders. The party has portrayed the action as an attempt to prevent its demonstration from taking place. Authorities, meanwhile, have taken preventive measures to avert an unauthorised gathering.

The wider dispute centres on allegations concerning electoral roll revision and demands for accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner. These allegations should not be treated as established findings without supporting evidence.

Further clarity on the legal grounds for the detentions, the leaders’ status and the official police response will be important in determining the next developments.

The episode highlights the growing tension surrounding the proposed CJP demonstration in Delhi, with the airport detentions emerging as a major point of controversy ahead of the planned protest.
