Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an emotional tribute to the actor, remembering his remarkable screen presence, creative versatility and fearless personality. Veteran actor Nana Patekar’s death at the age of 75 has left Indian cinema mourning the loss of one of its most distinctive and powerful performers.
Patekar died in Goa on Thursday, October 8, after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was found unconscious at his residence and was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him. Despite around 45 minutes of CPR, he could not be saved and was declared dead at approximately 5:20 am.
PM Modi Remembers Nana Patekar’s Unmistakable Presence
Reacting to the veteran actor’s passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Nana Patekar as an artist whose intensity and individuality set him apart.
“Few actors possessed the intensity, individuality and unmistakable presence that Shri Nana Patekar Ji had,” PM Modi said in his tribute.
The Prime Minister highlighted Patekar’s ability to transform every character through his versatility and creativity. According to Modi, the actor gave audiences memorable characters that would continue to be remembered for generations.
The tribute also acknowledged another defining aspect of Patekar’s personality—his willingness to speak openly about his beliefs.
PM Modi noted that the actor was admired for his “frank and forthright views” and for never hesitating to express what he believed in. His straightforward nature had become an important part of his public identity over the decades.
‘His Passing Leaves a Deep Void’
In expressing his condolences, PM Modi underlined the enormous contribution Nana Patekar made to both Hindi and Marathi cinema.

“Shri Nana Patekar’s contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema was immense. His passing leaves a deep void,” the Prime Minister said.
He extended his condolences to Patekar’s family, friends and millions of admirers who connected with his work across generations.
The message concluded with “Om Shanti,” reflecting the solemnity of the national mourning following the actor’s sudden death.
A Career Defined by Intensity and Range
Nana Patekar, born Vishwanath Patekar, built a career spanning several decades across theatre, Hindi cinema and Marathi cinema. He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and gradually established himself as an actor capable of portraying complex and emotionally demanding characters.
His performances in films such as Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi, Welcome and Natsamrat demonstrated the extraordinary range of his acting.
Unlike performers who remained confined to conventional hero or villain roles, Patekar repeatedly moved between intense dramas, socially relevant cinema, serious characters and mainstream entertainers.

His portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome also introduced his distinctive comic timing and eccentric screen persona to a newer generation of audiences.
National Awards and Padma Shri Recognition
Patekar’s contribution to Indian cinema was recognised with some of the country’s most prestigious honours. He was a three-time National Film Award winner, receiving recognition for Parinda, Krantiveer and Agni Sakshi.
In 2013, he was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts.
Beyond acting, Patekar also worked as a director and theatre artist. His film Prahaar: The Final Attack reflected his longstanding interest in stories involving discipline, sacrifice and the lives of soldiers.
An Irreplaceable Chapter in Indian Cinema
Nana Patekar’s appeal went beyond stardom. His performances were often marked by restraint, raw emotion, powerful dialogue delivery and an ability to make audiences feel the inner conflict of his characters.
His personality outside cinema was equally distinctive. Known for speaking his mind without excessive diplomatic language, he maintained an individuality that was rare within the film industry.
His sudden passing has therefore created a sense of loss that extends beyond Bollywood. For generations of viewers, Nana Patekar represented an acting style that was deeply personal, intense and unmistakably his own.
As PM Modi’s tribute emphasised, the characters he created will continue to live on. His films, performances and distinctive voice have become part of the cultural memory of Indian cinema.
With his death, the country has lost not merely a celebrated actor, but an artist whose presence could command a screen without demanding attention—and whose legacy is likely to endure for generations.
