NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on Kuwait International Airport that resulted in the death of an Indian citizen and left several other Indians injured. In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the incident and reiterated India’s longstanding position that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted during conflicts.

According to the MEA, the attack occurred amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia. The government said it was deeply saddened by the loss of life and extended its condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national. Authorities also confirmed that multiple Indian citizens sustained injuries in the incident.

The statement emphasized that since the beginning of the conflict in the region, India has consistently called for restraint and urged all sides to avoid actions that endanger civilian populations. New Delhi once again appealed to the parties involved to cease attacks that threaten innocent lives and critical public infrastructure.

The Indian government assured that its diplomatic mission in Kuwait is actively assisting those affected by the attack. Officials said the Indian Embassy is coordinating with local authorities and providing all possible support to injured nationals and their families.

The MEA further stated that Indian missions and consular posts across the region have been placed on alert. These missions are continuing to monitor developments closely and are proactively supporting members of the Indian community living in affected areas.

The latest incident comes at a sensitive time for India-Kuwait relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kuwait in December 2024, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Gulf nation in more than four decades. During the visit, both countries elevated their ties and discussed cooperation in trade, energy, security, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

PM Modi’s visit was seen as a major milestone in strengthening strategic relations between the two countries. Kuwait is home to a large Indian expatriate community, making the safety and welfare of Indian nationals a key priority for New Delhi. The current attack is therefore likely to be closely monitored by both governments as they work to ensure the security of civilians and maintain regional stability.

Analysis

India’s response reflects its balanced diplomatic approach to the ongoing West Asia crisis. By condemning the attack while avoiding direct alignment with any party to the conflict, New Delhi is attempting to safeguard its interests and protect its citizens in the region.

The death of an Indian national highlights the growing risks faced by expatriate communities as regional tensions escalate. With millions of Indians living and working across the Gulf, any deterioration in security conditions has significant humanitarian and diplomatic implications for India.

The reference to PM Modi’s Kuwait visit underscores the importance of bilateral relations between the two nations. The visit strengthened cooperation across several sectors and reinforced India’s commitment to the Gulf region. Against that backdrop, India’s swift response and diplomatic engagement demonstrate its determination to protect its citizens while supporting efforts aimed at reducing violence and restoring stability.

As the situation unfolds, India is expected to remain in close contact with Kuwaiti authorities and continue monitoring developments affecting Indian nationals across the region.
