In a major crackdown on an inter-state drug trafficking network, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has seized 18.64 kg of crude heroin in two back-to-back operations near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The coordinated action, carried out under Operation Black Hawk, also resulted in the arrest of three alleged members of the trafficking network.
According to the Press Information Bureau, the operation was conducted by the CBN’s Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh units after intelligence inputs indicated the movement of narcotics from the northeastern region towards Lucknow. Officials said the seized contraband was allegedly being transported for distribution and consumption in Uttar Pradesh.
Operation Black Hawk Targets Drug Trafficking Route
The operation began after the CBN MP Unit developed specific intelligence concerning the transportation of drugs from the Northeast towards Lucknow. Acting on the information, joint teams from the CBN MP and UP units established surveillance along the Sultanpur-Lucknow Highway during the intervening night of August 20 and 21.
Investigators tracked suspected vehicles through multiple toll plazas before launching targeted interceptions. The operation eventually exposed sophisticated methods allegedly being used by traffickers to hide narcotics inside specially modified vehicles.
The first major interception took place near Lucknow on August 21, when officers stopped an Assam-registered Hyundai Creta. The occupants initially claimed that there was nothing suspicious inside the vehicle. However, investigators noticed details that prompted further questioning.
Suspicious Fuel Stops Expose Hidden Heroin
According to the official account, the occupants disclosed that the vehicle had been refuelled four times while travelling approximately 500 kilometres. This unusual pattern increased the officers’ suspicion.
A physical tapping test of the vehicle’s fuel tank reportedly produced an unusual hollow sound, indicating the possibility of a concealed cavity.
The vehicle was subsequently taken to the CBN office in Lucknow, where technical assistance was used to dismantle the fuel tank. Officers reportedly discovered a specially fabricated compartment containing 25 waterproof packages.
The packages were found to contain 16.46 kg of crude heroin, according to the government release. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.
The discovery highlighted the increasingly sophisticated concealment techniques allegedly being employed by drug trafficking networks to move narcotics across state borders.
Second Interception Uncovers Secret Truck Chamber
The CBN UP Unit separately developed another intelligence input concerning a heavy commercial vehicle allegedly transporting contraband along the Siliguri-Lucknow corridor.
CBN teams tracked the truck through several toll plazas before intercepting it near Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. Officers conducted a systematic physical examination of the vehicle.
During the search, investigators discovered a specially constructed secret chamber inside the truck’s body frame. The concealed compartment contained 2.16 kg of crude heroin, according to the official statement. One suspect was arrested following the recovery.
The two operations together resulted in the seizure of 18.64 kg of crude heroin and the arrest of three suspects. Both vehicles used for transporting the alleged contraband were also confiscated by the authorities.
Three Suspects Booked Under NDPS Act
The three arrested individuals have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The CBN has also initiated further investigations into the financial and logistical aspects of the alleged trafficking operation. Officials are now working to identify the upstream suppliers in the northeastern region and determine the wider network responsible for moving the narcotics towards Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators are also examining possible downstream distribution channels to establish whether the arrested suspects were part of a larger organised trafficking network.
CBN Expands Crackdown on Drug Networks
The seizure represents a significant enforcement action against inter-state narcotics trafficking, particularly because investigators were able to detect sophisticated concealment mechanisms inside two different types of vehicles.
The use of a fabricated fuel-tank cavity in the SUV and a secret chamber inside a heavy commercial vehicle indicates the lengths to which trafficking networks can allegedly go to evade conventional searches.
The CBN’s coordinated action across multiple locations and transport corridors also demonstrates the importance of intelligence-led surveillance in tackling organised drug trafficking.
The investigation is continuing, with authorities focusing on tracing the source of the heroin, identifying additional people involved and mapping the financial links behind the alleged network.
The government has described the seizure as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking. With 18.64 kg of crude heroin seized and three suspects arrested, Operation Black Hawk has dealt a significant blow to the trafficking route allegedly connecting the Northeast with Uttar Pradesh.
