The political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress intensified on Friday after BJP leader Amit Malviya launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit over remarks involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The controversy erupted after Gandhi mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy during a Congress event, using a hug with Dikshit to illustrate his criticism. Dikshit subsequently brought Meloni into the exchange, triggering sharp condemnation from BJP leaders.
Malviya accused the Congress leaders of crossing the boundaries of political debate and argued that the episode reflected a serious deterioration in the party’s political discourse.
“Basic Decency” Becomes BJP’s Central Attack
In a strongly worded statement, Malviya said the remarks demonstrated how far the Congress had fallen in its political conduct.
“The disgraceful and slanderous remarks by Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit targeting the Prime Minister, mocking his foreign policy and dragging a foreign woman leader into a defamatory public taunt show just how low the Congress has sunk,” Malviya said.
He further accused the opposition party of replacing political arguments with personal attacks.
“When personal abuse replaces political argument, the Congress only further erodes its credibility as a mainstream political party,” he said. Malviya also claimed that the controversy reflected a wider problem within the Congress.
“The rot in the Congress’s political discourse is unmistakable and electorally, it will come at a cost,” he added. His comments came as the BJP intensified its criticism of Gandhi following the remarks made at the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention.
Rahul Gandhi Mocks PM Modi’s Foreign Policy
Gandhi had targeted Prime Minister Modi while speaking about India’s foreign policy. He suggested that Modi’s diplomatic approach had been reduced to interactions involving hugs with foreign leaders.
To make his point, Gandhi called Sandeep Dikshit on stage and hugged him in an apparent reference to the Prime Minister’s public interactions with international leaders.
The exchange then took a controversial turn when Dikshit referred to Giorgia Meloni, asking Gandhi whether he had hugged him while imagining him to be the Italian Prime Minister.
The interaction drew laughter at the event but soon became a major political controversy, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress leaders of using inappropriate language and making objectionable references involving a foreign leader.
BJP Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Crossing Political Limits
The BJP has argued that criticism of the Prime Minister is a normal part of democratic politics, but personal remarks and references involving foreign leaders cross the limits of acceptable political discourse.
Malviya’s criticism specifically focused on what he described as the use of personal abuse instead of substantive political arguments.
The BJP leader said the episode was not merely about political correctness but about maintaining basic standards of public conduct.
Earlier, Malviya had described the remarks as deeply disturbing and argued that women in public life should not be reduced to objects of jokes or inappropriate commentary.
“Women are not props for their fantasies, nor are they fair game for vulgar sexual commentary,” Malviya said, according to reports. He stressed that the matter was ultimately about “basic decency.”
BJP Leaders Rally Behind Amit Malviya
Several BJP leaders have joined the criticism of Rahul Gandhi and Sandeep Dikshit. Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi asked Gandhi to “grow up,” arguing that the Leader of the Opposition should demonstrate greater maturity while criticising an elected government.

“Running India requires mature leadership, not amateur dramatics,” Joshi said. He also accused Gandhi of insulting the people of India by attacking the Prime Minister, who was elected to office through the democratic process.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj also condemned Gandhi’s remarks, describing the language as “uncultured, obscene, and indecent.” She argued that the conduct of a Leader of the Opposition should reflect the dignity attached to the constitutional position.
Congress Faces BJP Counterattack
The controversy has provided the BJP with another opportunity to question Gandhi’s political style and leadership.
The ruling party has repeatedly accused Gandhi of relying on personal attacks and provocative rhetoric while challenging the Modi government. The latest dispute has now been added to that broader political narrative.
Congress, however, has defended Gandhi and argued that the remarks were made in the context of political criticism of Modi’s foreign-policy style. The party has also pointed out that Gandhi himself did not initially mention Meloni by name during his remarks.
The disagreement therefore reflects two sharply different interpretations of the episode: the BJP sees it as an unacceptable personal and gender-related attack, while the Congress frames it as political satire aimed at the Prime Minister’s diplomatic style.
Meloni Reference Turns Political Exchange Into Major Row
The involvement of Giorgia Meloni has significantly amplified the controversy.
Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, has been a prominent figure in India’s international engagements with Modi. Her public interactions with the Indian Prime Minister have previously attracted considerable attention.
The BJP has maintained that references to foreign leaders should be handled with responsibility and dignity, particularly by senior Indian politicians.
The Congress event, meanwhile, has become the latest flashpoint in the increasingly confrontational political relationship between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.

Malviya’s strongest warning was directed at the Congress’s political credibility. He argued that repeated personal attacks could ultimately damage the party’s standing among voters.
“The rot in the Congress’s political discourse is unmistakable and electorally, it will come at a cost,” he said. The remark signals that the BJP intends to turn the controversy into a broader political argument about Congress leadership, public conduct and Rahul Gandhi’s role as Leader of the Opposition.
With both parties already engaged in intense political battles, the Rahul Gandhi-Meloni controversy is likely to remain a prominent talking point. What began as a stage exchange over Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy has now developed into another fierce BJP-Congress confrontation over political language, public dignity and the boundaries of criticism.
