In a major move aimed at modernising India’s traditional healthcare ecosystem, the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of AYUSH. The partnership seeks to accelerate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the AYUSH sector by integrating valuable research resources with AIKosh, India’s sovereign AI repository.

The initiative is expected to strengthen AI-driven research, encourage innovation, and support the development of advanced healthcare solutions based on India’s traditional systems of medicine. By combining modern AI technologies with centuries-old medical knowledge, the collaboration aims to create a stronger, technology-enabled healthcare ecosystem.

Senior Officials Formalise the Agreement

The agreement was signed by Shri Sudeep Srivastava, Chief Operating Officer of the IndiaAI Mission and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Dr. Kavita Jain, Joint Secretary and Chief Vigilance Officer in the Ministry of AYUSH.

Senior officials from both ministries attended the signing ceremony, highlighting the importance of the collaboration in advancing India’s digital and healthcare ambitions.

The partnership reflects the government’s broader vision of promoting responsible AI while strengthening indigenous knowledge systems through technological innovation.

AIKosh to Receive Valuable AYUSH Research Resources

A major feature of the collaboration is the integration of eligible AYUSH research artefacts into AIKosh, India’s national AI repository. The Ministry of AYUSH will contribute anonymised health research data and related digital assets that can be safely used for AI research and development.

The resources expected to be added include:

  • Health research datasets
  • Metadata
  • Artificial Intelligence models
  • Toolkits
  • Research use cases

These assets will be shared in accordance with existing data-sharing policies and regulatory guidelines, ensuring privacy and security while promoting responsible innovation.

Researchers, academic institutions, startups, and innovators across the country will be able to access these resources to develop AI-powered healthcare solutions aligned with India’s national priorities.

IndiaAI Compute Infrastructure to Support Innovation

Apart from contributing research data, the collaboration also opens the door for eligible stakeholders within the AYUSH ecosystem to utilise India’s AI computing infrastructure through the IndiaAI Compute ecosystem.

India

This advanced computing platform is expected to provide researchers and developers with the computational resources required to build sophisticated AI models and scalable healthcare technologies.

The initiative is expected to accelerate research involving traditional medicine while encouraging innovation in diagnosis, treatment support, medicinal plant research, and healthcare delivery.

Combining Ancient Knowledge with Modern Technology

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sudeep Srivastava described the agreement as an important milestone in enriching AIKosh with valuable datasets from India’s traditional healthcare systems.

He said the collaboration between advanced AI technology and India’s ancient medicinal wisdom would empower researchers as well as practitioners working in traditional medicine. According to him, expanding AIKosh with authentic healthcare datasets will strengthen AI research while preserving and promoting India’s rich medical heritage.

His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that cutting-edge digital technologies support the growth of indigenous healthcare systems rather than replace them.

AI to Strengthen AYUSH Research and Capacity Building

Dr. Kavita Jain also highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence within the AYUSH ecosystem.

She said integrating AI with traditional medicine would create new opportunities for evidence-based research, knowledge management, and technological innovation. According to her, the collaboration will help strengthen research activities, improve medicinal plant studies, support drug administration, and enhance capacity-building initiatives.

She added that AI can play a vital role in making the AYUSH ecosystem more technology-driven, efficient, and prepared for future healthcare challenges.

Agreement Valid for Two Years

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, the collaboration will initially remain in force for two years. The agreement also includes a provision for automatic renewal through mutual consent between both organisations.

Importantly, the partnership does not involve any financial liability or funding commitment from either ministry. Instead, it focuses on sharing expertise, research resources, and technological capabilities to achieve common national objectives.

Strengthening India’s Digital Healthcare Future

The collaboration represents another significant milestone in India’s efforts to become a global leader in responsible Artificial Intelligence while preserving its traditional systems of medicine.

By bringing together AIKosh’s national AI infrastructure and the Ministry of AYUSH’s research ecosystem, the initiative is expected to accelerate scientific discoveries, improve healthcare innovation, and promote evidence-based applications of traditional medicine.

The partnership also reinforces the government’s vision of building a secure, inclusive, and future-ready digital ecosystem where Artificial Intelligence serves the public good. As AI continues to reshape healthcare globally, this initiative positions India to leverage its unique combination of technological expertise and centuries-old medicinal knowledge for better healthcare outcomes and sustainable innovation.
