West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari has praised the state police following a major operation against an alleged illegal sand mining network in Birbhum district. The raid, carried out by Birbhum Police under the Mohammad Bazar Police Station limits, resulted in the seizure of ₹5.5 crore in cash and 15 kilograms of gold from a location allegedly linked to sand mafia figure Tullu Mondal, also known as Mohd Nazibuddin.
According to the information shared by Suvendu Adhikari, the operation was launched after police received specific source-based intelligence regarding the alleged activities of the accused. Acting on the inputs, officers conducted a carefully planned raid that uncovered a large quantity of cash and precious metal believed to have been amassed through illegal activities. Authorities also stated that the counting of the recovered cash was still in progress, indicating that the final amount could increase.
The operation is being seen as one of the biggest enforcement actions against alleged illegal sand mining operations in the district in recent years.
Suvendu Adhikari Commends Law Enforcement Personnel
Reacting to the development, Suvendu Adhikari congratulated the officers involved in the operation and described the raid as a commendable achievement for law enforcement agencies.
He expressed appreciation for the Director General of Police, the Superintendent of Police of Birbhum, and the district police personnel who participated in the search operation. According to Adhikari, the officers acted swiftly and professionally while carrying out the raid, demonstrating the effectiveness of intelligence-based policing.
He said the successful operation reflects the determination of the police to act decisively against criminal networks involved in the illegal exploitation of natural resources.
‘Zero Tolerance Against Corruption’
Adhikari used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to a strict anti-corruption policy. He said the ongoing campaign against corruption would continue with a “Zero Tolerance Against Corruption” approach serving as the guiding principle.
He asserted that no individual who had allegedly accumulated wealth by exploiting public resources would be spared from legal action. Stressing accountability, Adhikari said public wealth belongs to the people and any attempt to misuse it for personal gain must be dealt with firmly under the law.
He further maintained that vigilance and uncompromising enforcement would continue in order to protect public resources and ensure transparency.
Strong Message Against Mafia Networks
CM Suvendu also issued a strong warning to those allegedly involved in illegal mining and organized crime.
According to Adhikari, individuals with questionable backgrounds who have built fortunes through unlawful means and alleged political patronage will face legal scrutiny. Without naming any political leaders directly, he alleged that certain individuals had benefited from their association with the previous ruling political establishment while exploiting natural resources.
He said the government must ensure that criminal syndicates are dismantled and that no one is allowed to operate above the law. Adhikari added that the campaign against mafia networks would continue with sustained enforcement action across the state.
Investigation Into the Seized Assets Continues
Police officials are continuing their investigation to determine the source of the recovered cash and gold. Besides examining financial records and property-related documents, investigators are expected to identify other individuals who may have been connected to the alleged illegal sand mining network.

Officials have also not ruled out the possibility of further recoveries as the investigation progresses. The seized cash is still being counted, while the recovered gold is expected to undergo official valuation and documentation as part of the legal process.
