ALIGARH: A shocking case of suspected honour killing has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, where police have arrested three members of a family after the body of a 21-year-old woman was allegedly recovered from a field. Investigators believe the woman was murdered because she wished to marry a man of her choice despite opposition from her relatives.
Woman Reportedly Wanted To Marry Her Neighbour
According to the police investigation, the victim had been in a relationship with a young man from her neighbourhood and wanted to marry him. Family members reportedly objected to the relationship and repeatedly asked her to end it. However, the woman remained firm in her decision, leading to growing tensions within the household.
Police suspect that the disagreement eventually escalated into a violent crime. Investigators believe the family considered the relationship damaging to their social standing and allegedly planned the murder to prevent the marriage.
Body Allegedly Buried To Destroy Evidence
During the investigation, police discovered that the victim had allegedly been taken to an agricultural field on the pretext of routine work. Officials say she was strangled before her body was secretly buried in a pit dug inside the family’s farmland in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The disappearance initially raised suspicion among local residents, prompting police to question family members. As inconsistencies emerged during interrogation, investigators intensified their probe, eventually leading to the recovery of the body.
3 Relatives Taken Into Custody

Police have arrested 3 members of the victim’s family, including her father, in connection with the case. They are being questioned regarding their alleged roles in the murder and the subsequent burial of the body. Authorities have registered a criminal case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further legal proceedings are underway.
Officials said forensic teams examined the burial site and collected evidence that will be used during the investigation. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Police Probe Possible Honour Killing Angle
Investigators are treating the incident as a suspected honour killing, a crime in which victims are allegedly targeted by relatives for choosing partners or marriages against family wishes. Police said they are examining witness statements, digital evidence, and the sequence of events leading to the woman’s disappearance and death.
Authorities have also spoken to neighbours and acquaintances to understand the nature of the victim’s relationship and whether she had expressed concerns about threats from family members before the incident.
Concern Over Honour-Based Violence
The incident has once again highlighted the persistence of honour-related crimes in parts of the country despite strict legal provisions. Human rights groups and legal experts have consistently argued that adults have the constitutional right to choose their life partners without fear of violence or coercion. Recent court observations have also stressed the responsibility of authorities to protect consenting adults facing threats from their own families.
Police officials have assured that the investigation will continue and that anyone found involved in the crime or in destroying evidence will face legal action. They have appealed to the public not to spread rumours while the investigation remains in progress.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift justice and stronger measures to prevent crimes committed in the name of family honour. Authorities maintain that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly examined before the filing of a chargesheet.
