Remembering the Legacy of Operation Vijay

The Kargil War of 1999 remains one of the most significant chapters in India’s military history. Pakistani intruders occupied strategic mountain peaks overlooking National Highway 1A, threatening the vital supply route connecting Srinagar and Leh.

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Vijay, undertaking one of the world’s toughest high-altitude military campaigns. Soldiers fought in freezing temperatures, steep rocky terrain, and under continuous enemy fire to reclaim every occupied position.

The campaign witnessed remarkable acts of courage by officers and jawans who displayed exceptional leadership and determination despite overwhelming challenges. After weeks of intense fighting, India successfully restored control over the occupied territory, leading to the declaration of victory on July 26, 1999.
