A fresh political confrontation has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi led a march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in New Delhi over the alleged police crackdown on student protesters. The BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp counterattack, accusing the Congress of indulging in “politics of arrogance” and disrespecting democratic institutions. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad led the party’s response, strongly criticising Rahul Gandhi’s actions and announcing nationwide protests against the Congress.
The political standoff follows Tuesday’s dramatic protest in which Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several Opposition MPs attempted to march to the Prime Minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. The Congress said the protest was aimed at seeking accountability from the government over the alleged use of force against students demonstrating over examination-related issues. Delhi Police stopped the march near the high-security zone, detaining several leaders before releasing them later.
Ravi Shankar Prasad Leads BJP’s Counterattack
Addressing a press conference, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a blistering attack on Rahul Gandhi, questioning his conduct and accusing him of disregarding constitutional norms.
Prasad asked whether India functions according to Rahul Gandhi’s “arrogance” and asserted that no individual, regardless of political position, can violate established security protocols surrounding the Prime Minister’s residence. He alleged that the Congress deliberately attempted to create political drama by marching towards one of the country’s most secure locations.
The BJP leader said democratic protests have their place, but crossing security restrictions around the Prime Minister’s residence was unacceptable. He further accused the Congress of attempting to exploit student concerns for political mileage instead of offering constructive solutions.
BJP Announces Nationwide Demonstrations
Following the incident, the BJP announced that it would organise protests across the country against what it described as the Congress party’s “irresponsible politics.”
Party leaders said workers would reach out to people across states to explain why they believe Rahul Gandhi’s actions amounted to disrespecting constitutional institutions and established democratic practices. The BJP maintained that political disagreements should be expressed through Parliament and other democratic forums rather than by attempting to march towards highly protected government premises.
Congress Defends Rahul Gandhi’s Protest
The Congress, however, rejected the BJP’s criticism and defended the protest as a peaceful democratic exercise.

Rahul Gandhi maintained that the march was intended to draw the Prime Minister’s attention to the alleged police action against students and youth protesters. Congress leaders argued that the government had failed to respond adequately to public concerns regarding examination-related controversies and the treatment of demonstrators.
According to the Opposition, the protest symbolised solidarity with students and was aimed at demanding accountability rather than provoking confrontation. Congress leaders also criticised the police action against party workers, alleging unnecessary use of force during the demonstration.
Political War Intensifies
The exchange has further deepened the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the Congress during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The ruling party has repeatedly accused Rahul Gandhi of pursuing confrontational politics, while the Congress insists it is raising issues of public concern that the government has ignored. The latest controversy has now become another flashpoint, with both parties exchanging sharp accusations over the limits of democratic protest and political accountability.
The BJP argued that security arrangements around the Prime Minister’s residence cannot be compromised under any circumstances, whereas the Congress claimed that peaceful protests are an essential feature of democracy and should not be suppressed.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also criticised the Congress protest, stating that students deserve meaningful reforms and accountability rather than political outrage, adding another dimension to the BJP’s response against the Opposition.
Debate Set to Continue
Political observers expect the confrontation to continue both inside Parliament and on public platforms in the coming days. With the BJP planning nationwide demonstrations and the Congress vowing to continue raising student-related issues, the dispute is unlikely to subside soon.
The episode has once again highlighted the growing political polarisation between the country’s two principal parties. While the BJP has projected Rahul Gandhi’s march as a violation of democratic norms and security protocols, the Congress continues to portray it as a legitimate protest against the government’s handling of student concerns.
As Parliament remains in session, the issue is expected to dominate political discussions, with both sides preparing to defend their positions before the public and within the legislature.
