The political temperature in New Delhi rose sharply on Sunday after several parties belonging to the INDIA bloc staged a walkout from the customary all-party meeting convened ahead of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. The protest was triggered by the Centre’s decision to invite 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) Members of Parliament, who have recently aligned themselves with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), as a separate parliamentary group.
The all-party meeting, chaired by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, was intended to build consensus on the legislative agenda for the Monsoon Session beginning Monday. However, the presence of the rebel MPs became the focal point of the meeting, overshadowing discussions on pending bills and parliamentary business.
INDIA Bloc Objects to Recognition of Rebel MPs
Leaders of the opposition alliance strongly objected to the invitation extended to the breakaway MPs, arguing that their participation as an independent bloc amounted to granting legitimacy to a group whose political status remains under dispute.
According to opposition leaders, allowing the rebel MPs to participate separately before all legal and procedural issues are settled sends the wrong political message. They maintained that the matter involving their departure from the Trinamool Congress should first be resolved through parliamentary procedures before any official recognition is extended.
Following their protest, representatives from several INDIA bloc parties walked out of the meeting in a coordinated demonstration, highlighting the growing tensions between the government and the opposition ahead of the session.
Separate Seating Fuels Political Dispute
The controversy intensified after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla approved separate seating arrangements for the 20 rebel MPs in the Lower House. The decision is being viewed as a significant procedural acknowledgment of the group’s split from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.
The rebel lawmakers had sought separate seating after joining the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, claiming they now function as an independent parliamentary group. Reports indicate that Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has been recognised as the chief whip of the new bloc for parliamentary coordination, while senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay remains one of its prominent leaders.
The seating arrangement has become one of the most debated issues before the commencement of the Monsoon Session, with both political and procedural implications.
Government Defends Invitation
The government defended its decision to invite the rebel MPs, stating that all recognised parliamentary groups should have an opportunity to participate in discussions aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament.
Officials maintained that the all-party meeting is a parliamentary convention where every recognised group is invited irrespective of political differences. The Centre also appealed to all parties to cooperate during the Monsoon Session and engage constructively on legislative matters.
Government sources expressed hope that despite Sunday’s confrontation, Parliament would function effectively and important legislation could be discussed without prolonged disruptions.

The Monsoon Session is already expected to witness intense exchanges between the government and the opposition over a range of national issues. Apart from the controversy surrounding the rebel TMC MPs, opposition parties are likely to raise concerns relating to governance, economic issues, national security, and several recent political developments.
