Technical Issue Causes Unexpected Delay

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) 2026 faced disruption on May 30 after a technical problem affected the examination process at several centres across the country. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the nationwide entrance examination, confirmed that the delay was caused by a technical malfunction reported by its technology partner, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The issue prevented the examination from starting on time at certain locations, creating anxiety among thousands of candidates who had arrived prepared for their scheduled test sessions. Students and parents expressed concerns as the delay extended beyond the expected reporting time.

NTA Responds to Candidate Concerns

In an official statement, the NTA acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the technical fault and assured students that immediate corrective measures had been taken. According to the agency, the problem was identified and resolved promptly, allowing examinations to continue without further interruption.

To protect the interests of candidates, NTA announced that all affected students would receive complete compensatory time. The agency emphasized that no examinee would lose valuable examination minutes because of circumstances beyond their control.

Officials reiterated that fairness remains a priority and that all candidates would be given equal opportunities to complete their examinations under standard conditions.

Afternoon Session Schedule Revised

As a result of the disruption, the schedule for the afternoon session underwent modifications. Candidates appearing in the second shift were instructed to enter examination centres from 2:30 PM onward. However, instead of beginning at the originally scheduled time of 3:00 PM, the examination commenced at 4:00 PM.

The revised arrangement was introduced to ensure smooth operations and allow technical systems to function properly before candidates began their tests. Examination authorities advised students to remain patient and cooperate with centre officials during the process.

Morning Candidates Given Additional Time

NTA also clarified that students appearing in the morning session would not be disadvantaged due to the delay. Candidates were permitted to continue writing their examinations for the full allotted duration.

Rather than ending the session at the originally planned time, centres allowed students to remain until they had completed the entire paper. This decision was taken to maintain fairness and preserve the integrity of the examination process.

Educational experts noted that compensatory time is a standard approach in situations where unforeseen technical issues interrupt computer-based examinations.

Previous Rescheduling Due to Eid-ul-Adha

The latest disruption comes only days after NTA revised the CUET UG 2026 examination calendar because of Eid-ul-Adha-related public holidays in several regions. Examinations scheduled for May 28 were shifted to alternative dates to avoid inconvenience to candidates.

Fresh admit cards and updated examination details were subsequently issued to affected students. The rescheduling exercise was aimed at ensuring that candidates could participate in the examination without facing logistical challenges arising from holiday restrictions.

Importance of CUET for University Admissions

CUET UG has become one of India’s most significant entrance examinations, serving as a gateway to undergraduate admissions in numerous central, state, and participating universities. Every year, lakhs of students appear for the test, making its smooth conduct essential for the higher education admission process.

Given the scale of the examination, occasional technical and logistical challenges can arise. However, education authorities stress the importance of swift action to minimize disruption and maintain student confidence.

Looking Ahead

With the technical issue now resolved, NTA has assured candidates that examinations will continue as planned. The agency has urged students to follow official announcements and rely only on verified communication channels for updates.

While the delay created temporary uncertainty, authorities maintain that corrective measures and compensatory provisions have ensured a fair testing environment for all candidates. The focus now remains on completing the remaining examination sessions smoothly and ensuring a transparent admission process for aspiring university students across the country.
