KOLKATA: West Bengal’s Murshidabad train accident has taken a new turn after a preliminary Indian Railways investigation reportedly held the gateman on duty responsible for the fatal level-crossing collision. The crash, involving a passenger train and a school van, claimed three lives, including two students, while several others sustained critical injuries. The findings have intensified scrutiny over railway safety measures and operational procedures at manned level crossings.

Fatal Collision at Manned Railway Crossing

The accident occurred on the Azimganj–Katwa railway section between Karnasubarna station and the Gobindapur rail gate. According to railway officials, the school van attempted to cross the tracks when a passenger train was approaching. The train struck the vehicle with tremendous force, resulting in a devastating crash that claimed the lives of two schoolchildren and another individual. Several students travelling in the van sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The incident sent shockwaves across the district, with grieving families, local residents and public representatives demanding accountability and stronger safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Preliminary Probe Highlights Gateman’s Role

Officials associated with the preliminary railway inquiry have reportedly concluded that the level-crossing gate was not properly secured before the arrival of the train. Initial findings suggest the gateman failed to close the barrier in time, allowing the school van to enter the crossing while the train was nearing the location.

Investigators are examining whether standard operating procedures were followed and whether there was any lapse in communication between railway staff responsible for managing train movement and the level crossing. The inquiry is expected to determine whether negligence or procedural violations directly contributed to the accident.

Multiple Investigations Underway

Apart from the internal railway investigation, local police have also begun their own probe into the incident. Authorities are recording statements from railway employees, eyewitnesses, the school van driver and local residents to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Investigators are also reviewing technical records, signalling logs and the functioning of the gate mechanism to determine whether there were any mechanical failures or if the accident resulted solely from human error.

Officials have indicated that disciplinary action may follow if negligence is established against railway personnel or any other individuals connected to the incident.

Questions Over Safety at Level Crossings

The Murshidabad tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about safety at level crossings across the country. Although Indian Railways has significantly reduced the number of unmanned level crossings over the past decade, accidents continue to occur at manned crossings due to operational lapses, human error and violations of traffic rules.

Railway safety experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of strict adherence to operating procedures, proper training of gatemen and greater public awareness regarding the dangers of crossing railway tracks when warning signals are active.

Several experts have also called for the installation of automated gates, surveillance cameras and advanced warning systems at vulnerable crossings to reduce dependence on manual operations.

Public Anger and Political Reactions

The fatal accident has triggered widespread anger among local residents, who questioned how such a tragedy could occur at a manned railway crossing. Family members of the victims demanded swift justice and strict punishment for anyone found responsible.

Political leaders and local representatives have expressed condolences to the bereaved families while urging authorities to complete the investigation quickly and implement corrective measures to improve railway safety.

Railways Assure Strict Action

Railway officials have assured that the final inquiry report will establish responsibility based on evidence and that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if negligence is confirmed. The administration has also reiterated its commitment to strengthening safety protocols and preventing similar accidents in the future.

Meanwhile, medical teams continue to monitor the condition of the injured students receiving treatment, while counselling and assistance are being extended to the affected families.

The Murshidabad school van accident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of even a single operational lapse at railway crossings. As investigators continue their work, the findings are expected to influence future safety measures aimed at protecting passengers, pedestrians and schoolchildren across India’s railway network.
