India entered a new chapter in eco-friendly transportation on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind railway station in Haryana. The launch marks a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner technologies in line with the nation’s green energy goals.
The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, becoming nation’s first passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells instead of conventional diesel engines. The project is expected to serve as a model for future green railway initiatives across the country.
Hydrogen Train Designed for Zero-Emission Travel
Unlike diesel-powered trains, the new hydrogen train generates electricity through hydrogen fuel cells. The technology combines hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity, with water vapour being the only emission. This makes it one of the cleanest forms of rail transportation currently available.
The hydrogen-powered train has been developed under the “Make in India” initiative and reflects India’s growing focus on clean mobility and energy independence. It is also supported by dedicated hydrogen refuelling infrastructure established at Jind, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
Modern Features and Passenger Comfort
The newly launched train has been equipped with advanced safety systems and modern passenger facilities. According to railway officials, the train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving coaches and eight trailer coaches. It is capable of carrying around 2,500 to 2,600 passengers.

The train has a designed maximum speed of around 110 kmph while its operational speed will remain suitable for the selected route. Modern automatic doors, air-conditioned coaches, passenger information systems, CCTV surveillance and other safety mechanisms have been incorporated to provide a comfortable travel experience.
A Milestone for Indian Railways
The hydrogen train represents one of the most significant technological upgrades undertaken by Railways in recent years. The project demonstrates the country’s commitment to adopting clean technologies while modernising railway infrastructure.
Hydrogen-powered trains are considered especially useful for railway sections where complete electrification is either expensive or technically difficult. Instead of relying on diesel locomotives, these trains provide an environmentally friendly alternative without requiring overhead electric lines.
Officials believe the successful operation of this train could pave the way for similar services on additional routes across the country.
Part of Green Hydrogen Vision
The launch complements the government’s broader vision of promoting green hydrogen as a future fuel. Hydrogen is increasingly viewed as an important energy source capable of reducing dependence on fossil fuels while supporting India’s climate commitments.
Indian Railways has been working on multiple green initiatives, including electrification of railway tracks, deployment of energy-efficient locomotives, installation of solar power systems and adoption of alternative fuels. The hydrogen train is expected to further strengthen these efforts.

Experts believe such technologies can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector while encouraging domestic innovation and manufacturing.
Nations Using Hydrogen Rail Technology
With this launch, India joins a small group of countries experimenting with or operating hydrogen-powered trains. Nations including Germany, France, China, Italy and Japan have already introduced hydrogen rail technology as part of their transition towards sustainable transportation.
The successful introduction of India’s first hydrogen train demonstrates the country’s capability to develop advanced railway technology domestically while keeping pace with global innovation.
Officials indicated that additional hydrogen-powered trains may be introduced after evaluating the operational performance of the Jind-Sonipat service.
Boost for Haryana and Regional Connectivity
The launch is expected to provide a boost to Haryana’s railway infrastructure while improving regional connectivity between Jind and Sonipat. The project is also expected to generate technical expertise in hydrogen fuel technology and create opportunities for future research and manufacturing.
Residents of the region welcomed the inauguration, describing it as a historic moment for Haryana and Indian Railways. The launch also formed part of the Prime Minister’s broader visit to northern India, during which multiple infrastructure and development projects were inaugurated.
Towards a Cleaner Future
The introduction of India’s first hydrogen-powered train represents more than just a technological achievement. It reflects the country’s long-term commitment to sustainable transportation, reduced dependence on fossil fuels and cleaner public infrastructure.
If the pilot service proves successful, Indian Railways is expected to expand hydrogen-powered operations to more routes in the coming years, strengthening India’s position as a leader in green mobility while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
